I didnt realise they targeted companies, just joe blogs on their home computers, well I was wrong.

Company in Dubai ask us for two rather expensive atems for detecting cracks in subsea pipework, not unusual seeing as there are quite a few of those in the Middle East. We check that the company exists and send them a proforma invoice.

Get a flash up that 96k has been put into our bank account which is about 80k too much, accounts notifies the company who say OMG type stuff and asks us nicely to transfer the overpayment back.......you know the rest. Truns out the company is actually a small business in Afghanistan, using a Dubai front! they are getting more confident in their attempts. Rolling Eyes

why would a company put 96k into our account for two articles that cost about 8k each? Wed assumed at first it was an electronic transfer which is the norm for countries abroad but this was paid in with a cheque, same principle as my friend will pick up my bike but ive paid you 4k too much so just give him the balance etc... obviously on a much bigger scale.

Basically, you pay them the difference, and then you lose the initial payment, leaving you out of pocket for whatever you gave them. I assume they either refute the original payment, or perform some kind of fraud for the initial payment, which gets recovered when the fraud is discovered.

our techies were asking our accounts lady if she needed to borrow the washing machine in the workshop, she looked puzzled. We have to be careful when dealing with other countries, especially those that are involved in terrorism etc.

We have one Middle Eastern customer who is spending the equivelant of a decent sized property on a state of the art Decompression chamber for his ship salvaging business. he regularly comes over with huge wads of cash as well as his bank paying installments. its a pain in the bum apparently as the paperwork for large cash amounts is a nightmare.

I love my new job its very interesting Very Happy

Had 50K deposited out of the blue from Russia once. I contacted the Russian guy and he just said "we are going to place an order so paid you first". No quotes, no proformas, nothing.

A couple of weeks later an order for 50K arrived. It seems they had a budget to spend but hadn't decided on what the configuration should be but if it hadn't been spent by date 'X' they would lose it!

Wouldn't mind a few more like that. Smile

Funny this. Just had our regular caller ring this morning.

He said he was from Windows, and that my server was sending odd information to them.

Didn't take long for him to hang up on me. I said "Oh really? You're right, my Windows Server has been playing up, as I hooked it up to my Apple Mac and have had many issues with hardwiring phone sockets to electrical power points. How can you help me?"

These guys are utter scum. They got money out of my Grandad a few years ago because of an apparent "virus" on his PC system. Lost £500 odd quid.

If your accounts people don't know what money laundering is, how can they deal with large amounts of money sensibly?

only one woman and I think this is the first time shes encountered anything like it. She did the right thing though and the bank is on it. People wanting to launder money should really make sure that the company they are dealing with are willling to participate.

When I used to work at a Harley dealership, it was nothing for the Hells Angels to come in , buy several unregistered bikes and pay cash before the laws changed. We never batted an eyelid, I did get pissed off having to count it all though.
