Yamaha SR125 Custom Y Reg Battery

First post, Hi!

I'm having problems replacing my battery.

1. Which way do you put the battery in, negative or positive in first? The battery was replaced when I first bought the bike and we think the battery might have been put in backwards.

2. How on earth do you get the left bolt on? There's a tiny little black plastic case with a tiny gap on the left of the bike. We can't figure out how to get it attached unless we swap the positive and negative wires but then we can't get it in to the tiny case.

3. Anybody know where's the best place to get a new battery? I live in Wanstead so very close to the Yamaha dealer in South Woodford but been advised to buy elsewhere as the dealers are always more expensive.

4. Any advice for a complete novice wanting to do their own bike repairs?

1. It doesn't really matter. I'd go with negative first if you really needed to make a choice.

2. I'm unsure what you mean. Can you provide a photo?

3. I don't live local to there so I can't tell a specific store. Have you tried just looking for battery retailers though?

4. Get a haynes manual (also preferably the workshop manual) and a good (not a cheap chinese) toolkit. Take your time doing things; rushing things leads to mistakes/brakes.

Connect the positive terminal first because it's safer.

Reasoning - if you accidentally touch your spanner/ratchet against any metal part of the frame you will not cause a short as the negative is not connected.

When you come to tighten the negative terminal it doesn't matter if you touch the frame.

Same theory with car battery replacement.

My Haynes manual is winging its way to me as I type.

I landed up buying the battery and fluid from www.mdsbattery.co.uk for £27.98 P&P included.
