Update - Turns out the thread was irrelevant as I underestimated the size of the garage Whistle fits in fairly comfortably with much back-n-forth turning to get it close to the wall, and still plenty of space to get the car in and door down. Just need to find time to install the ground anchor, garage defender and block of wood to stop anyone going too far in and crunching the bike :shifty:https://i61.tinypic.com/xfz3t.jpghttps://i58.tinypic.com/160r31w.jpg
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The new garage I have isn't big enough to get the mrs's car in along with my bike, even with it flat to the back wall. Her parking elsewhere isn't an option as my cars in the only available nearby space.

Leaving the bike anywhere outside locally is going to get it nicked, so the only option I can see is whenever her cars at home, leaving it tight to the bike and the garage door up.

Does this sound like a safe idea Thinking or is it relatively easy to drag a car with the handbrake on if someone wanted to get the bike out in the night.

People seeing its in there if someone snoops inside doesn't concern me too much as the garage door is seriously reinforced once the cars out and its locked down.

After my K4 Thou got nicked, I've been parking the mrs car right up behind the bike every night. I'm end of terrace and I have a bike length or so at the side before my side wall starts, and the car fits in behind the bike nicely. Also got it chained to the wall through a plate I made up at work. Seems to have worked for the last 2 years or so.

If they want it, they'll have it, but I'm hoping the ball-ache of either moving the car out the way first, or lifting it over it altogether is enough to put them off.

Cheers, thats what im hoping. Lifting it over will be impossible as theres no space above the car, so its only if they carry the car out. Like you say though if they want it enough i guess a group could lift it.

Leave it in gear too as it's often easy to cut the hand brake cable - but a van would likely easily pull it away enough that it won't offer much.
However, may well be enough to put off kids or mean they go after someone that doesn't have a car in front of their garage Smile.

Some nights I leave the keys in my bike with the garage unlocked. Laughing I'm really up on security. Smile

Or smash the car window, take the hand brake off and push the car backwards

Bad bad idea...

All they have to do is break the window...release the hand brake..push car back...open garage...nick bike.

Anything is better than nothing though. ...bit just be aware that if they really want it, you'll have 2 claims to sort...the bike AND the car.

me too- if they want it they will take it regardless, id rather just minimize the damage they do breaking shit to get in if its all locked up Laughing Laughing

regards op post, my main worry would be the lil scamps see garage door open, sneak in for a look, try to nick bike, realise they have been foiled, then set light to it all out of spite (enter own emotion there)

tricky one Confused

I don't favour leaving the garage open with a car hanging out personally. They are already half way to nicking your bike or car once into the garage I'd say.

I'd leave the car outside in front of the door so you can't get at the door, and then I'd fit a defender, so that basically to access the lock, you need to move the car first.

Keeping your bike out of sight is far better in my book, than leaving it on show with a load of security chains on etc. You ideally don't want anyone to know you have the bike, an not know where it's parked, easier said than done I know.

Making the garage like a fortress to get into in the first place would be my first preferred option, and get a ground anchor concreted into the garage floor too.

If the situation where you live is that neighbour's garages are always getting broken into and bikes have been stolen etc, then I'd seriously think about trying to get the bike in the house at night. It's the only way I'd feel it was safe, if I was no more that 20m away from it in my house.

I don't know how having the bike in the house affects home insurance, and if it's allowed legally due to the fire risk of having petrol inside the house etc?

Yeah on topic, I would say that regardless of the added security from using the car, an open garage door will make people curious and add interest in your property, which may end badly.

I would think it'd be pretty safe to be honest. In my case, they'd have to drag the car out first, it would be impossible to lift the bike over the car without making noise, as the gap either side is about 6-8", you cant even squeeze a leg through.

IMO, if it looks like a complete pain in the arse to get, they're more likely to piss off and look for one that can be easily chucked into a van.

I am of the opinion that the more noise a thief has to make to nick stuff the less likely they are to nick it.

I have 5 locks on the garage doors, 4 chains joining 5 bikes together with the bike ramp and tool box plus a ground anchor, plus two disc locks, hopefully this will deter the local chav druggie from having a go at least. Oh and the garage is PIR sensor alarmed to the main house.

A van pulling it away isnt an issue as its a really tight garage-facing-garage block that takes a near 5 point turn to even get out. Smashing the window and handbrake off is an obvious potential issue i didnt think of however Rolling Eyes hmm

I just read what you were suggesting - I was thinking in front of the door.

No way I would try it, not at all.

You can also get pump-up dollies that you put around the wheels, pump the jack and it lifts the wheel by squeezing each side together.

Probably just enough space to use them.

VERY easily move a car if you want to in all sorts of ways; no way I would rely on that. While you think your garage door is quite strong, that doesn't mean it's actually hard to break in to, one way or another.
To start with - do you use it to get in or out? How many locks. You can actually drill quite quietly if you want to and most locks won't stand up for THAT long. Or a little oxy setup, etc.

Oh and don't think they'll be too bothered by scraping up the car while the van is pulling it out. Also, not too hard to manouver said van so it's pulling fairly forwards most of the way.

Ive got a garage defender..cost about £20. Why mess about leaving your car in front of garage?

Firstly youll have to move your car every time u want to get your bike out...or even any time you want to get into the garage. ..will soon become a ballache.

Get a garage defender...secure it with an Abloy lock. They will have a game getting into the garage....then ground anchor the bike inside the garage with a short Almax.

Id pretty much guarantee they wont nick your bike.

Up to you of course, but I feel the local scallies/scumbags may find an open garage door with car in it a good excuse for mischief whether or not they touch the bike

Thinking about it, it is a bit dodgy. In my case, my bedroom window is only a few feet away from the bike, and my mrs wakes up if a gnat farts half a mile away so it's pretty handy for me.

If the bike was out of earshot I don't think I'd bother leaving it open with the car in front, just make the garage a complete and utter arsepiece to get into.

Wheels turned full lock to one side with steering lock on, still defeatable, but another thing they have to beat that will take time

You also didn't read the post properly, it seems.
The issue isn't with securing the bike, but where to park the car.

The defender wouldnt work unfortunantly, what i relied on in my last place but i cant get the door down once the cars in now as it sticks out a little too far once the bikes in Thumbs Down

Back to plan 2 of selling it ane buying a dirty old bandit or something to chain to a lampost nearby Rolling Eyes sad times

Buy the missus a smaller car?

Get her a classic Mini, 205GTi, 106 Rallye or something equally small and fun. If she doesn't want to sell her car, tell her to find somewhere else to fucking park it! Thumbs Up
