Does this sound right I get 130 miles to 15 litres of fuel. Bike is Suzuki GSR 600 about 90bhp I do 40 mile 5 days a week there and back on the motorway to work. Seems to be costing me a fortune.

try getting up earlier and keep your speed between 55 and 70 in top, bet you're doing 85-90 and running late?

That's about 40mpg which sounds OK.

Maybe try keep it under 6500rpm?

A cheap (£10-20) mod you might want to try is to change the gearing so you get more speed per given RPM.

The trade off is acceleration though.

I get about the same on my Daytona and thats a bit more highly strung but also faired. My normal cruising speed on the motorway is ~85mph. I'd say you're about bang on.

Sit about 75 to 80 but acclerate onto the motorway like a right knob.
Set off at 0550 for 0700 start.

Well thats your problem right there and at 6am the motorway should be deserted. It is when I went down the M62 towards Manchester anyway.

Fuel gauge seems highly iffy. Sometimes I can string 130 miles out of it and the other day it was flashing (3 litres left according to the manual) at 72.2 miles of town riding. Would a fly screen help with the wind buffering and drag?

M65/M6 is quite busy towards Preston at that time.

i would say anything you can do to reduce drag and wind resistance will increase your fuel efficiency

It'll do fuck all. You'll still have a big frontal area with no fairing and a big, upright rider sat on top of it. It may help with wind buffering but it may just direct the air into another equally uncomfortable place. Depends on the screen and the bike.

I think I'm noticing the fuel cost more because my normal wage is around £1900 a month and I've dropped by 900 quid due to being on the sick. Used to spunking 100 quid a week on fuel when it's sunny going for a blast and commuting.

You need to work it out properly.

When you next fill up, zero your clock

Then when you next have to fill up your tank and make a note of the number of litres including the 2 decimal places

ie 13.54 litres

You now multiply 13.54 by 0.22 (this makes the litres in to gallons)

Thus 13.54 litres = 2.9788 UK gallons

Okay say you did 140 miles

This would then equate to 140 divide by 2.9788

Which equals 46.99 mpg

----

Going to work I get about 45mpg, best I have got on a long run at legal speeds was 73mpg.

1000cc bikes are often better on fuel on higher speeds than 600cc bikes. This is due to better torque and lower rev needed for the speed.

Go for the full retard pose (sorry, streamlined) pose and see if your mpg increases. I managed a faintly ridiculous 80mpg by getting as much body out of the wind as possible (and riding at a mind numbing 60mph)

75-80 is a bad speed for fuel efficiency.
Accelerating on the slip road shouldn't matter too much if it's a one off.

Why? My car does around 68mpg at that speed, although it increases to 88mpg at a steady 50mph though the roadworks on the M62 Cool Not bad for a 145mph turbo diesel Laughing

The rental RT I used in the States last year did 59mpg at a steady 75-ish. 40mpg is very poor on an open road IMHO Confused

The faster you go the worse fuel efficiency you will get (in motorway cruising).
That doesn't necessarily mean that you'll get 'bad' efficiency at high speeds because that's entirely dependent on what you consider bad.

Should never concern yourself with trivial things like fuel consumption when you have a bike. Thumbs Up

I get low to mid 40's normally on the Blade, up to nearly 50 on the motorway cruising at about 90.

This ^^^

And do: Zero odometer at next fill.
Brim the tank.
At the next fill record the odo.
Brim the tank.
Record how many Litres you added to brim.

By extrapolation you then determine Miles Per Gallon. As laid out above by the forum's resident mathematician.
