There are some seriously scary statistics here!

Motorcycle Theory tests down 45.5% for the first quarter of 2013.

14000 less DL196 books (25 CBT certificates per book) in the same period.

Yes, the stats showed a slight increase pre Jan 2013 but by far the overall trend is downhill Sad

Rogerborg, you are really good at analyzing statistics Wink, what are your thoughts?

I'm not terribly shocked - everybody knew the licensing laws were changing January 2013, so a fair few people who were thinking about getting licensing up would've pushed on and got it all done at the end of 2012, when they might have otherwise thought "sod it, wait until next spring".

In fact, looking at it, they say as much in the article Smile

Too early to say whether the 3rd directive is going to put people off long term.

As above, I think its less a sign people are giving up on biking rather the people imminentely interested in getting a license forced ahead and got it done before they implemented all the new sh-t Thumbs Down

Best to look at 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13.

If everyone pushed their tests in last year then there'd be a huge rise between 2010-11/2011-12.

If they didn't then we are truly seeing the uptake of motorcycling fall apart before our eyes.

Also, i think to be honest a large amount of the last few years statistics would be quite dependant on the economy as opposed to interest in biking/test changes, as quite a large proportion of bikers get a bike as a toy/fair weather riding, so with those two things being non essential if someones penny pinching its going to take a back seat to other thing i'd imagine.

They released some early doors stats which showed everyone trying to cram it in before the deadline:

October 2011: 5,487 tests
October 2012: 7,188 tests

November 2011: 4,837 tests
November 2012: 7,365 tests

December 2011: 2,924 tests
December 2012: 5,135 tests

January 2012: 2,243 tests
January 2013 1st to 18th: 4,433 tests
January 2013 19th to 31st: 474 tests


The scale of that drop off in Theory tests is startling, but we'll need to see how it does over the whole year.

Although that might be longer than some training schools can survive. I imagine that essentially all 17-18 year olds, and some 19-23 year olds, will be just be riding on a CBT until they reach the next test category.

get some good large scale petitions/MEP involvement against the EU 'save the kittys' laws i.e pointless and thoughtless restrictions to normal bikers Mr. Green

on another note, as of today we're apparently all safer
