Hi All

i`ve just brought a 1994 zzr400n as a project, the poor thing has been stood for the last nine years.
I have cleaned the carbs out as they hadnt been drained before the bike had been laid up.
i had tried getting it into gear to see if the engine was seized and it came out of gear fine, but today it went into first lovely, and now wont come out.
Had it running for the first time today but it still would not come out of gear.
A friend of mine who has had many kawasaki`s said he has had this a couple of times with kawasakis that have stood for ages?
And it is a split the cases and move the gears to free them up
Hopefully someone will save me splitting the cases

It may have a positive neutral finder... so the bike won't shift into 2nd unless your bike is moving at a few miles per hour.

That could be the problem?

It sounds more like a negative neutral finder. Laughing

:edit: To try and at least be a tad helpful.

Does the shift rod actually rotate?

while it is stuck in 1st, rock the bike back and forth GENTLY and it may free up the box. If it does, get the engine running and wait until it is nice and warm before you try and engage the gears again.
Also, just check that the gear change is not rotating on the shaft splines - its may just need tightening up.
