So the Yamaha broke down yesterday. In the missing down of rain, I had to push it 5 mile to the garage. The guy reckons the fuel vacuum is fcuked

So he took the main vacuum of, and created a direct line to the carbs. Will this work the same?

So rode away from the garage, and it died again. He reckons it's now the carbs need cleaning. It's in the garage now getting the carbs clean. Anything else it could be.

When the bike broke down it just lost all power and then cut out. It started back up 10minutes later but, then cut out again. ?

Cheers Brendan

Oh. So it was the vacuum, and once that was sorted it was dirty carbs that caused the exact same problem. Within minutes.

Weird, that. Rolling Eyes

Hi

No it won't work. The early Diversion uses a vacuum fuel pump (which is pathetic). A direct line from the tank will work when there is plenty of fuel in the tank, but once the fuel level drops below the level of the carbs you will land up having no way for fuel to get from the tank to the carbs.

All the best

Keith

Fuel vacuum is fucked? What does that even mean?

If the bike has a prime position on the tap you don't need a vacuum (so an easy test).

It cut out in the rain? So water in the carbs or tank is possible, but if it sounded ok when it was running I'd suspect an electrical problem.

He is now saying fuel pump. And that when it drops below a certain level. It won't work that's what I though anyways. Yeah it was racing when it cut out I though it might have been electrical. But then it cut out again when it wasn't raining. (after he removed the vacuum) When I get it back I'm just going to keep it topped up and take it to, a official Yamaha dealer.

Racing as in an increase in revs just before it cut out ? That points to it running lean due losing fuel supply.

With the fuel pump not working (which it won't if the vacuum line is disconnected) then fuel will not flow. With it bypassed you will get fuel until the level in the tank drops.

Note those pumps are a sick joke. If you run down on fuel so it cuts out before you switch to reserve then it is quite easy to land up flattening the battery cranking the engine over before it has pumped through enough fuel to start the engine.

It wouldn't surprise me if the fuel pump is dead and that caused the original problem. And bypassing the pump and keeping the tank full might well work as a short term bodge. But the better solution would probably be to fit a low pressure electric fuel pump like the later bikes. Should be able to find one from loads of bikes that will do the job (loads of Yamahas have them, same for quite a lot of Kawasakis and no doubt others); typically they pulse pump and cut off when there is pressure after them (such as when the carbs are full).

All the best

Keith
