I currently have a 1980 Yamaha XJ650. Yamaha, in their wisdom, designed and built an excellent UJM and then fitted it with Hitachi 32mm carbs.

The Hitachi carbs are garbage. Good if you spend most of the value of the bike giving them a full rebuild and then spending far too long getting them set up, but I've had enough of fiddling with them.

So my plan is to find a set of 32mm carbs off another 4 cylinder machine and make them fit. Preferably a set off something in the 500-750cc size with a power output of 50-85 bhp so I won't need to cock around with the jetting too much.

To add a bit more fun, the carbs on my bike are set quite close together. Bandit carbs appear to be spaced too far apart. GSXR400 carbs look like they may fit, currently bidding on a set on ebay. 600 Divvy carbs are too small, something like 28mm.

I want to avoid anything particularly rare or expensive. The point of this change is to use something common and cheap so I can get parts easily.
