I've got a 1999 hornet, I have a damaged radiator cap which when idling gets the temperature to rise 2bars below the highest, when should my fan kick in? I daren't let the bike temperature grt higher because the damaged cap is spitting abit of coolant out aswel as steaming. Could someone also tell me the temperatures between each bar, my bike has 5 little bars to chunky bars and then the fat square H C bars. When riding the temperature sits one or two bars above cold.

I'd hate to be riding that when the cap gives out and sprays boiling hot liquid everywhere.

It's only done it when it's sat running.

ahh you see I turn it off moments before it will hit that because the small dent in the cap thread spits out abit of coolant and starts steaming so I shit it and turn it all off.

I have owned my hornet for just over a year, in that time it has gone up to just under the red, on more than one occasion, and I think I have heard the fan a total of two times.

it's below the middle when I've been on riding but when it's just sat ticking over it begins to rise, my dads saying if I don't see the fan working the bike is dangerous and will seize up on me.

Sounds exactly the same as my bike, and I'm sure the same as every other bike, maybe. Thumbs Up

[/quote] Sounds Well that's what I've been thinking, I got the bike on Friday and used it for about 30miles to and from work in the morning, so before I went to show it off Saturday afternoon I warm up then left it running off the choke for about 20mins/half hour in the sun and that's when it happened.

my 03 hornet rad fan comes on about 2 thirds up. Had to replace the rad cap on mine as it decided to fail and vomit boiling coolant out on the road, luckily I was nearly home

20 mins/30 mins sounds too long really.

30 minutes of choke?? Confused

either your doing something wrong or there's something wrong with the bike, I put choke on, wheel out of garage, close garage shut choke off.

Pretty much this. Leaving it idling for 20-30 minutes in high ambient temperatures really isn't a good idea either.

The OP has a thread about this in the workshop too. He's been told how to check the sensor and fan. From the length of time it was left idling - and now we know it was on choke so it would have been faster than a normal idle - I'm not entirely convinced that the rad cap is faulty - it may well have overheated and blown off pressure.

Fixed. Thanks for the help
After checking the fuses like said I disconnected the plug and put it to the bike, I got nothing then I noticed the switch on the rad had a slight angle onit, so I tried it with a angle and the fan ran, put it back and tried again and had no luck a couple of times, turns out the clip was originally on upside down so it was sitting on the switch but making no contact. Thanks for the help
