Just got back from a trip out to Willingham woods, well got to as the sun was out. Laughing there were three policemen in front of us int he queue for tea and two of them were wearing guns! Confused Now I know they are red hot on speeding bikers on that road but i think this is taking it a bit too far! Shocked So next time you are hitting the red line down that road better duck as it may not be a radar gun in his hand! Shocked Laughing

Should have asked them if they can demonstrate that they have lawful authority to carry a firearm in public at that time and place.

They'd have just loved that, and you're fairly unlikely to be shot in the face. Thumbs Up

I know we do have armed police in each force but it just seemed unusual to see them in a setting like that. I have of course seen them at Heathrow airport and the scariest scene I witnessed was two policemen at Hong Kong airport that didn't look old enough to grow whskers let alone carry a sub machine gun! Shocked

I remember years back when me and a few friends went to amsterdam in our teens, had got used to be able to drink beer outside as they're all laid back n' chilled over there - at least they were, don't know what the EU's been upto lately Laughing

Turns out you werent allowed to drink cans in the airport, little to our knowledge - hear two guys saying something loudly in dutch, turn round and see two policemen with machine guns stood staring at us - scared us sh-tless Rolling Eyes

A range rover pulled in to the private wood which held our air rifle field target club. It was a bank holiday so not a normal club day and there were only five of us, so we hadn't put up the club sign at the entrance to the wood.

Two flak jackets got out of the rover and approached the five of us, who each had a couple of grand's worth of target rifle on the ground while we stood drinking tea.

They asked what was going on as passers by had seen "Men with guns in the wood". We explained the situation and they relaxed and took a non-authoritarian interest in our flashy target rigs. We gave them a demo of the accuracy we had, then gave them a go. They were hopeless.

"Right, we've shown you ours, now show us yours" I said.

After a nod from the senior of the pair, the other took the mag out of his Glock, proved the chamber empty, then passed it to me. Nice bit of kit, very ergonomic. It got passed round and then back to the officer.

"And the rest?" I cheekily asked.

Same drill as before, this time with the MP5. I asked him about operational range and target size. He said centre-mass at 100 metres. He'd just seen us put pellet on top of pellet at 50 metres, so wasn't at all surprised when I said, "How can you miss a bloke with this?"

So, a not unpleasant encounter with armed police.

I'm used to seeing it in other countries (even shot handguns beside the cops in Poland!) but not here. I did a bit of a double take when I saw two cops with handguns on their hips a few months ago, too. I wonder if they've changed the policy on carrying them or something. An old program I watched suggested they had gun safes within their cars and were only allowed to get the guns out when authorised.

Same in france.

Went with the mrs last year and went to disneyland for a day - no joke - main open area before the turn styles into the park - 3 police armed with full blown assault rifles walking back and forth.

I can only presume it was a terror-alert or something but if not god help french children Laughing

Fairly sure armed officers can carry their gear anywhere in the UK without nescessarily being on-call though, as they're rapid response i.e have to be prepared at all times etc

As intimated above, the law on it is pretty fuzzy, and they are the law.

AFAKI, it's now purely an operational decision. There's no statutory restrictions on which or when or where coppers can carry shooters. If every copper in the country went out tooled up tomorrow, who would or could stop them? Thinking

I used to be in a gun club and used a variety of different weapons in the past. We did have a visit from a guy from New Zealand who had brought his own guns with him. (I should add he was registered as he trained policemen over there). He let me have a shoot with his Clock 17 and a very nice Berretta 94. I was impressed with the Glock as it was so light and fitted more naturally in my hand. I can see why they are the choice of a lot of forces around the world. I also heard that the rapid response units carry weapons in a safe in the car but didn't realise they could carry them on their person unless in a situation.

A darked-out Land Rover pulled into the bus stop I was about to use a few weeks ago. Fellas in flak jackets get out of each side and walk to the back, open door and tool up with some kind of machine gun, get back in and clear off. Scary moment all being said.

Being from NI I would find it quite strange if a policeman wasn't carrying his standard Glock.

Tbh it gives me more confidence in them, usually over here they've better things to do with their time ie catching actual terrorists and dealing with riots/bombs every month or so.

They were handing out tea and buns to the G8 protesters over here mind Laughing

Likewise in Canada. Only the auxiliaries ('specials' in the UK) don't have a firearm.

I find it miraculous they occasionally manage to hit the intended target and usually manage not to shoot bystanders or each other. The accuracy, firearms safety, gun handling and muzzle awareness displayed by the vast majority of armed response I have shot with or against is appalling.

Out of interest what would be the correct response/statute for that?

I'm not asking what the actual response would be, after all there are only so many variations of "go away and urinate you little oik" and/or "you're nicked for asking questions you terrorist you".

Very Happy Ah! there's your problem, difficult to tell if it's an 'innocent' bystander. Besides people make acceptable backstops don't they? Confused Wink

Firearms Act 1968 S7 - Police Permit

(1) A person who has obtained from the chief officer of police for the area in which he resides a permit for the purpose in the prescribed form may, without holding a certificate under this Act, have in his possession a firearm and ammunition in accordance with the terms of the permit.

My bold.

Apropos keggy's cool story, an interesting quirk is that it's more unconditionally illegal to possess air weapons and imitation firearms in public than shotguns and actual firearms, since they don't need to be loaded or even to have ammunition with them to fall foul of section 19.
