Hi,

This may sound like a stupied question, but just to confirm, there is no difference between car and bike oil? are there?

As long as it is the right viscosity(10-40) it should be good ?

Do you go for fully synthetic or semi and what brand?

I normally use Castrol

I have a fazer 600

many thanks

Hi

There can be differences. Some car oils can cause problems with bike clutches, but I use car oil in bikes much of the time and never had it cause a clutch issue.

I tend to take the view that while strictly speaking the bike oil might give the engine a marginally longer life, the bike itself is not likely to last long enough for that difference to be of any relevance.

All the best

Keith

So anything that ia not Magnetec . I am happy to spend more if needed as I rag the bike quite often so do want to treat him.

I thought of going to Halfords and buy a fully sentheyic castrol 4 L. Do you think I should be getting it from bike shop

As long as it doesn't have "friction modifiers" as these are usually the bits that'll cause issues with your clutch.

What's the price difference like? If you can get a bike specific oil for £1 more, then I'd get that just for that piece of mind. IMO.

You can buy good quality bike oil..Petronas Syntium,M&P £20,semi. Not worth using car oil for that price. Good quality car oils can be used,as long as their not 'energy conserving'. These oils have the 'anti-friction' additives that effect the clutch. I wouldn't use car oil if you ride the bike hard..track days etc.

Thanks waesly, I read the post and made sense.

I shall stick with bike oil but again the question is where to buy it from?
I think bike shops are expensive so thought should buy it from the Internet such as ebay or amazon which are most of the times cheaper than local shops. Where do you normally get it from?

Also I thought fully synthetic may be better but earlier post suggested to the contrary but in your post someone was using it which made it easier to rev their engine and abuse it

I've also heard that car oil causes clutches to slip on bikes because of something in the car engine oil that bike engine oil doesn't have... forgot what it is though

I went with castrol 1 liter power which is semi

what is strange is that their castrol 1 liter power racing is fully synthetic. If that is bad why do they promote it for race?

It's not whether it's fully or semi.

It is more important whether it has friction modifiers or not. Not all, fully synthetic oils have friction modifiers

Hi

Not sure how much of an issue synthetic is beyond paranoia from 30 years ago when it was new and it did cause odd problems (some early ones had limited amounts of the additives used to swell seals a touch, and so tended to leak a bit).

Used synthetic CAR oil in bikes without clutch problems. If it hasn't got friction modifiers in it I wouldn't worry about it too much.

All the best

Keith
