It's Friday, it's Funday, it's clicky on New Registration Stats Day.
And HOLY WHEELS OF STEELS, registrations are up. Double
OK, peds are down 25% on May 2012 and scooters are down 7.9%... oh-dear-how-sad.
But everything else is up. Adventure Sports, Custom, Naked, Sport/Tour, Touring, Trail/Enduro, even Supersports have recovered very slightly.
Not huge numbers, and the categorisation vagueness (YZF R125 is classed as a "supersport" ) muddies the water a bit. In fact, total sales, including peds, were only up 0.5%.
But! 125cc+ sales went up 4.1%, and non-scooter sales shot up 7.5% compared to May 2012. Better yet, while 0-50cc are down 24.9% and 51-125cc are down 4.8%, all larger capacities are up: 126-650cc sales went up by 24.6%!
Top sellers include the perennial favourites of R1200GS and Sportster 833, but the "CBR 500 RA" is making a showing, as is the Striple.
I read this as a clear sign that the market for congestion buster prolemobiles has peaked and glutted, and the rise in sales is to actual enthusiasts riding bikes for larks.
Triumph are doing amazingly well, just behind Yamaha (they'd be schooling them if not for the YBR125). Kawasaki are looking strong too, another sign that it's bigger bikes that are being shifted.
We might be seeing the tiny green shoots of a recovery, which is great news as these new bikes are the used bikes that we'll be buying in a few years time. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
