As a biker living in a particular area, you're more likely to notice any accidents involving bikers that happen around you. You probably don't pay attention to how many cars crash so much. I don't.

As for figures, I'm not sure about exact numbers, but looking at the nature of riding a motorbike and how they crash, I can believe there is a disproportionate of deaths and serious injuries compared to car driving.

New figures actually came out yesterday nationally

Quote:
The number of motorcycle users killed fell by 9 per cent from 362 in
2011 to 328 in 2012. The number of users reported as seriously
injured decreased by 5 per cent to 5,000. Total reported motorcycle
user casualties decreased by 4 per cent to 19,310 in 2012.
Motorcycle traffic decreased by 2 per cent over the same period

However, its very hit and miss as to the accuracy of all these 'statistics' as they fail to take into account many things, and for example most consider 'serious injury' as anything requiring hospitalisation - so a sprained finger Rolling Eyes ....

As for deaths - yes they account for a large proportion per user in comparison to car drivers.

However, this again doesn't take into account other factors like how many of those killed were driving like idiots when they would not be able to/choose to drive that way in a car.

Therefore biking isn't dangerous - those riders in specific are dangerous to themselves.

Just one example of how skewered all the statistics are.

I think your spot on here Smile also if a drunk driver/road rage did happen to clip you or you were involved in a crash then your going to actually be falling down the road.. car drivers on the other hand wont be.

Motorcyclists are always worse of because in the less likely event of a crash, IF you do crash you are much more exposed. Sad

I always figured because your a smaller and more manuverable vehicle your less likely to crash but if you do it's going to be worse than if you were in a car.

I haven't really seen a bike crash for a while. Cars and Lorries on the other hand.

Theres so many factors [as with above] to consider to be honest the statistics are about as useful as trying to find a link between counting holes in cheese and subsequently how many people choke on cheese relating to how many holes in said cheese.

Ultimately whatever statistics it spits out - if you make a stupid mistake/are very unlucky even when being careful - you become a statistic.

Very little you can actually draw in terms of realisitic chance of injury/death/accident etc.

I do slightly agree with ''its not if, but when you have an accident'', but i think for a lot of people [like myself] its that first accident thats enough to shake you up and make you damn careful to avoid anymore - again, excluding the odd unpredicable lunatic of course Rolling Eyes

Hello bikies -first thread woooo....Is it just me but does 6 deaths in less than one year sound overly excessive? God knows how many accidents, I passed a really bad one today on the A11 roundabout Brabrahm Road, the bike looked really messed up, the local rag said the biker was seriously injured but not life threatening. Last time I heard any national specs on bike accidents it was M/cycles were 2% of the road users but 20% of fatalities, that can't be right can it?

Per mile travelled I think stairs are more dangerous than motorcycles... but I bet you don't stay awake at night worrying about them do you?

6 per year sounds good to me.

I ride in Cambs a fair bit, and don't see many chucking themselves into hedges.

However their police did do me for speeding to "reduce road casualties" on the A1, on a Tuesday lunchtime, on a sunny day with excellent visibility. Rolling Eyes

TLDR.

Who cares, I'll take my chances.

Apparently police are reporting the highest fatalities in the born again and the intensive DAS category; the last one being rather contentious . After 20 years or so out, middle agers are buying bikes that are much more powerful than those of their yoof and can't handle them. Although middle aged, I'm not born again but a noob and a girl. It would be interesting to see the statistics for female riders.
