PostPosted: 12:03 - 04 Jul 2013    Post subject: Swinton insurance and riding other bikes Reply with quote

I'm trying to buy a motorcycle insurance policy. I visited the gocompare site, found Swinton to be cheapest, called my existing company to give them a chance to beat it, they fail so I say 'nope' and tell them to make sure it expires at the renewal date.

On gocompare, click through to Swinton where they have all the details I've put in. So I begin to check this really is the cover I need. Fully comp, yes, blah blah, no sign of being able to ride other bikes third party.
So I called them.

Me: "Am I covered to ride other bikes, third party?"
Her: "If it doesn't say you're not, they yes"
Me: "Bollocks. I know what you're like, I need to see that in writing"
Her: "Hold please....""There's nowhere on the online system to access the exact cover details you'll be getting"
Me:"Can I cancel it if the booklet comes through and I'm not covered?"
Her: "Yes, you'll be charged £25"
Me:"WTF. Then please can you find out if I am covered before I spend money"

Anyone have a Swinton fully comp policy (underwritten by Aviva) and can tell me if it's covered or not please?

I was never covered TPO on other bikes with them, they made some b/s about my age but then again MCE did the same and said no.

Only fuckers that give me ride other bikes are H&R Insurance who came up cheapest overall on thebikeinsurer.co.uk

Wicked quotes covers me to ride other bikes third part, and my insurance policy is fire and theft, no even fully comp.

I'm also only 18. Very Happy

www.thebikeinsurer.co.uk shows on the comparison page whether other bike cover is included. It also turns up the cheapest quotes for me.

I wouldn't even rely on the fact another persons/generally its covered by an insurance company as they can change each policy for each person - for example if you are a certain age/years experience it may include cover to rider other bikes, yet for someone else with less experience it may not be included - you neeed it clearly in writing - if they aren't providing that id say its a no/time to look elsewhere as theyre trying to lure you into a policy that probably isn't suitable.

Check out a quote from bikesure under adrian flux.

I think its down to the insurer not the broker to decide if you are covered or not.

My current policy, which is due to expire on 12th July, is with Aviva and it does not cover me for other bikes.

Basically, assume you are NOT until you are told you are.

Just got off the phone with them. I am covered to ride other bikes, TPO. Thumbs Up
Their website doesn't mention it but the bint on the phone confirmed it's definitely in the policy.
So I've cost them ~30mins of admin already and still got the same price as online. And they definitely don't like it when you play them at their own game and they are shown up. Thumbs Up

Could really wind her up, ring back and say as she isn't able to provide any tangible proof you were just ringing again to have it confirmed whilst you record the call for future 'reference' Laughing

Yes, you're right. But she was telling me it would cost me £25 to cancel that.
In the event the policy documents turn up and it's not on there, I'll tell my bank to reverse the payment.

The bike insurer returns silly quotes for me - I get fully comp about £300 cheaper from ebike directly. I do live in a shitty bit of London though.

My ebike policy allows to to ride others but it was an additional option, as was taking pillions.

Ebike don't seem to offer it... in fact they point blank refused to offer it for any policy.

I got direct bikes and they gave me ride other bikes included. I got a cheaper quote with swinton than bike insurer could offer that included other bikes, then called bike insurer and they get a like for like cheaper. Called them and they went away for half hour and reduced my premium by £30

Yes, you're right. But she was telling me it would cost me £25 to cancel that.

Strictly speaking, they're prohibited by law from charging a cancellation fee within the first 14 days. However, they can charge the "reasonable" cost of setting up the policy. Or in practice whatever they can get away with.

No option for me either, but that's on a multi-bike policy. Is there perhaps a different underwriter for single bike policies?

Junk mail goes back in the big red bin at the end of the street, phone calls make me feel wanted. Problem solved!

they email me a few times a week... usually the same cashback offers. i've tried the cashback codes, the prices are still more expensive than meerkat prices for swinton even after cashback... weird.

they did send me one the other day though titled... "FULL THROTTLE AHEAD, Daniel". bit ironic i thought for my bike insurer.

I insured through Swinton via the meerkat a few weeks ago. My policy details specifically exclude riding other bikes.

Late, I know, but I renewed my Swinton insurance tonight (down £55 Cool ) and it does cover me 3rd party on other bikes, so I guess it's down to the individual underwriters on the policy.
