Hey all just wandering about bike barns are they worth the money and do they affect your insurance as apparently they are classed as a garage (don't know how true this is) cheers in advance.

They are definitely not classed as a garage.

------
My previous insurance company wouldn't let me take out multi bike policy for 3 bikes, which were all in this, as they didn't class this as a garage.

Most probably because they knew you couldn't fit three bikes in there with your quad.

I very much doubt it. Both of my policies specifically exclude from the definition of "garage" any outbuildings other than a purpose built brick or concrete structure.

Given how few underwriters there actually are, I think you'll be lucky to find one who differs.

Thing is, insurance is essentially random so you may find it costs no more (or even less) to declare driveway or street parking.

As to value for money, well, the answer is "depends". Out of the weather, out of sight, might be worth it. Couldn't hurt. Unless it forms a warm, humid environment that rots your bike. Then it'll hurt.

If you have a private space you can put a smaller one in and don't have a garage i'd say its worth it personally depenandant on the value of the bikes [most of those things being in the many 100s of pounds IIRC last time i looked].

Again many come with little but basic security and require further payment to install 'improvements' such as dead bolts/reinforcements etc.

Good example might be if you're in a rough area the gardens like to get scouted and you have a drive, i'd rather them sat in that up the drive than just left loose with a little chain in the garden/out the front/on the road.

No, that's a disconcerting Photoshop job.

www.thebikebarn.net

It's not a garage, it's a tent.

On this note, it's always worth getting quotes for lower security options than you actually have. If you declare an Almax chain to shave a few quid off your insurance, but you only chain it up at home, you won't be covered if it gets nicked anywhere where you didn't chain it up.

Here is my review of them from early 2012
https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=238708

Coming up on 15 months old now, still works great, as long as it's secured/weighed down it's been pretty resilient to the wind/snow and rain etc

In my opinion - if you can't have a shed for whatever reason, they are great Thumbs Up

Ive had my bike barn for six years from the bikebarn site, still going strong even after getting blown across the farm yard in 80mph winds earlier this year but thats not usual weather and its secured with slabs and the weight of the bike now.

Out of interest, do you find moisture gets inside easily scorps Question

The garage i'm using at the moment [not for much longer as hopefully moving] is like a condensation magnet its as wet inside as if they were left in the garden most of the time Mad

not a problem, the ones from bikebarn site are made in Canada and they are more expensive than the ones here but I think six years and still going isnt too bad. We had two feet of snow up here a couple of years back and it handled it just fine.
