It's something I see used a lot on here in a derogatory way.

Never really understood why it's an insult.

Why is something gay worth less in some people's eyes than something that isn't gay?

Can someone explain?

Why is 'fuck' an insult? Or 'bell end'? Or 'twat'? I could go on.

They're essentially arbitrary words. It's just a well accepted way of making your feelings clear.

I remember a Portugese guy asking, "why is 'wanker' an insult to the British? How is it insulting? Everyone does it!!"

That's what makes 'gay' as an insult different, not unlike sexism or racism.

Everyone's a wanker. It's used to say that an individual acts in some unacceptable way. It can apply to anyone. But calling someone a gay, or n*gger, says that some whole class of human, with traits they were born with, are unacceptable simply by being. As a father of a gay son, I cringe when I hear it used that way.

Bell end. Unacceptable, simply by being male.

What's the difference?

Fair point, but I find it unlikely that people are implying that being male is somehow less human by using 'bell end', do you?

What do you mean by 'less human'?

It's an insult. They're implying that you are disliked. They're not implying that a bell end is disliked.

I like twats.

(It's obviously a different circumstance if a gay man is called a 'gay' as an insult directly pertaining to him).

Because the gays have vitiated the use of the word "queer".

That, and the fact that it's like an insult from JML - you can:

a. Directly insult the target.

and

b. Indirectly insult someone who is gay.

But wait - there's more!

You can also provoke those who are neither the a or b, but choose to be outraged on their respective behalf.

It's an insult! It's a floor wax! It's a dessert topping!

Ah, but in the merchant navy, a Portuguese wank is something special. it's where you start off with one hand while sitting on the other. When you get pins and needles in the hand you are sitting on you swap over and it feels like someone else is doing it Cool
