Now we've actually got a couple of days of summer, I'm totally roasting in my standard HG jacket, even with all liners removed and vents open. Been thinking about purchasing a light weight mesh top with built in armour as an alternative. Something still with decent protection I can stick under a t-shirt or hoody.

So what's any good?

Been checking out the Super-Shield CE Protector jacket and the Thor Impact Rig SE. Both look a similar design and come in for about a monkey.

Anyone else gone this route? What do you wear? Any recommendations?

I use an old Hein Gericke Air jacket and IIRC I should have a pair of 2nd hand trousers knocking around somewhere.

Air 3 currently £50 and Air 4 currently £80 on Hein Gericke site.

Don't bother with a hoody with armour underneath, you'll still roast.

I am using an Icon Hooligan mesh jacket at the moment, loads of breathability and airflow. Has back, shoulder and elbow armour. Very lightweight. When you hold it up to the light you can see through all the little holes. Quite strong parachute cord type material.

Got mine in a charity shop for £25 Smile

For crashing on the road, in most cases, abrashion resistance is more important than armour.

If you're doing car-park stunting, then armour makes sense as it's low speed but from a bigger height.

For impacts with other 'stuff', armour can only go so far - but you'll have a massively better time sliding along the road with abrasion resistance.

Without it, should you slide and hit a curb, it's quite likely you'll have lost your armour after the initial impact anyway.

Yeh, if it fits! Laughing

I have just purchased a vented jacket, probably paid way too much but it works bloody well, probably too well as it will be useless in anything but roasting heat and it has no removable insulating liner.

I've just got a Spada mesh tech jacket it has leather in most of the potential contact points and mesh everywhere else, it's like wearing a t-shirt. The leather isn't very thick and some of the stitching doesn't appear great but I'm quite happy.

I just wear my moto cross one, but I don't think it will do me much good at speed, though I rarely ride at any great speed

Got myself a Thor Impact Rig SE in the end. Mate had one going spare, so picked it up cheap. Very cool and breezy. Good armour, but granted abrasion protection is minimal. Most of my commute is very low speed filtering in London anyway, probably wouldn't slide much. Definitely stick to my usual jacket for longer faster ride outs.

That Triumph Raptor #3 Textile Jacket look good, good price too. Will get so much stick though, wearing that and not riding a Triumph... Smile

IMO it's worthwhile investing in a summer / touring jacket.

I have a Held Hakuna jacket, which I bought a few years ago when the pound was worth more. ~11 zips means loads of airflow, but it can be turned down if it gets chilly, and a removable waterproof liner for extra windblocking.

The waterproof liner isn't particularly useful in rain because it guides water down your arms and into any gloves you might be wearing - the wrists on the liner are elastic, so they won't really fit around the outside of any glove cuffs. So when touring, I either bring a second jacket, or a rain suit.

That way, you have a jacket you can wear almost any day it isn't raining (assuming more layers for warmth underneath), and is breathable enough to take to southern Spain etc.

TBH My main jacket is a HG Sheltex one with a removable liner. It's only now the weather's gone above 25C that it's become too hot and really only then going slowly around town. With the liner and fully zipped up, it's also been pretty good in the winter too, just needed thermal vest and sweatshirt to stay warm. The Sheltex has proven plenty water proof, but like yours, the rain does seep into you gloves and soak the seam at the end of the sleeves.

So as soon as the sun goes, it clouds over and threatens to rain, I'll be switching straight back. But whilst it's pushing 30C out there the armoured mesh vest should work well. Was lovely and breezy this morning.
