It's called an Osymetric Chainring. It effectively down gears the bike at the weakest point of your pedal stroke (12 and 6 oclock) and up gears it on the strongest point (3 and 9 oclock).

rotor Q rings is another option, not as dramatic as the osymetric but still feel odd for the first few 100km use and "supposedly" remove that "deadspot"

I use standard chainrings and Qrings

do they work? I dunno, certainly feels weird swapping between the two tho

I used to use a biopace ring on the outer, found it to be quite good. Noticeably less tiring.
