As you might be aware I'm now home from hospital, and lacking in stuff to do and this is going to be the situation for some time due to not being in the situation of being able to go back to work for a while Sad. I'm looking for some type of project to do, or basically just something to do which will help to occupy some of my time and be of interest to do.

Any suggestions would be useful, I am willing and happy to spend some money on it, but I'd prefer it to be cheaper rather than expensive suprisingly enough Laughing.

The stuff I'm still having problems with is my short term memory can be patchy, my eye sight still isn't 100% (and anything involving bright lights will be very very bad as light makes my sight and headaches worse Sad ), and my brain is making decision without using internal inhibitors so sometimes it's just making decision on first impulse Neutral but this isn't happening much, and it tends to be when something annoys me, or it's someone saying stuff which might as well be in a different language. Well, my walking still isn't 100% but I wasn't planning on any hiking around Englands projects. Laughing

Any suggestions and ideas welcomed and will be considered. Thumbs Up

Staying on the theme of bikes, why not get and old classic bike, do a full nut and bolt restoration, make it spin out and it would take you about a year to do (if you went slowly Laughing) and then hopefully by that time you'd be fit and well again and be able to ride it. Smile.

What about doing up the Mini Moto?

Its a bit fiddly to work on of course, but it means you can get it in and onto the kitchen table. You won't have to worry about big power tools or heavy garage-oriented objects falling on you, and you won't have to look at a computer screen.

Otherwise the other projects suggested sound fun.. some bike related project or other.

Another suggestion from me would be some sort of radio controlled model kit. An aerpolane maybe? They too are quite fiddly, but by their nature you need time to construct them, and you get something out of it at the end. They are fun too (Until you crash it Laughing). A Radio controlled model also means that you won't want to rush out and ride or drive something when you are done! Very Happy

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

As I said in irc, streetfighter project but this could be very costly depending on how much you wanted to do to it!

Luckily Laughing the minimoto is all working at the moment just needs me to fit the chain to it (and well, find it in G's garage which could take a long time!). I don't think having the minimoto inside on the kitchen table whilst working on it would be that popular really Sad. (can't think why Laughing Mr. Green )

Have been thinking of making some type of remote control model of some type. I'm gonna have to have a look around and try and find that place which had the remote control motorcycles with little gyro's or something in them as it could be fun. Smile

I've been thinking a lot about making a streetfighter of some type. Does anyone know any good breakers websites which list the bikes they have in as I don't really know what you get for your money other than a broken bike Laughing. I have been thinking about making the TL into a project maybe of a street fighter type. Don't know yet what I want to do though. Could just fit NOS to it. Twisted Evil

Hi

I would say go with the restoration of an older bike.

Failing that, subcontract for Danny.

All the best

Keith, may not be a good idea having to remember stuff and deal with annoying insurance sales people!

Radio control stuff sounds like fun, or maybe you can write a guide on how to made an engine from the contents of your kitchen.

Glad you're on the mend, albeit slowly.

Remember stuff is problem and annoying people are a problem as I have the desire to tell them where to go, and I suspect I would do which is one of the reasons I am not up to going back to work yet as I'd just get pissed off at customers which wouldn't be good. Sad

The bike restoration sounds like a good idea actually. I'm going to have to have a look around for bikes to buy which need working on, or restoring, and see where I can get with them. Does anyone know any good places for buying project bikes, and cat. C and D write offs from?

Thanks all. Thumbs Up

I *think* that a lot of these types of bikes are sold on Biketrader.
Maybe do a bit of research on the net and try to find a police auction.

Maybe have a look over the maplin site and build yourself something. An active sub maybe?
Maybe if a motorbike's too much then get an old mountain bike and do it up. When you're feeling a little better it's be a good way to exercise and work on your endurance.

Hmm could always look into the putting an engine onto a mountain bike. Twisted Evil Although not recommending to use it until I'm better Laughing. I believe G has a slightly bent mountain bike which was strapped to the trailer to take to Cadwell to get around on.

Will have to have a look at the auctions, and there is a very very big car auction place just down the road from where I live (Blackbushe airport have car auctions a few times a week) and will have to look into if they do bikes as it'll be happy shopping in there. Smile

Build a go kart, from scratch, just a wooden one, with stuff from local tips and maybe some newish sturdy axels, and then fit a small engine to it, just for fun.
When I was young we made one, without an engine, but before we were old enough to consider buying an engine and fitting it to it, we had already destroyed the poor gokart, along with a few peoples fences Embarassed
That is what I would do, as living in a small village, there isn't much else to do.
But a remote control airplane would be fun, especially if you could hook up a camera to it........ Rolling Eyes

Not sure if this is too little notice but it might give you some ideas. Think there is a large bike Autojumble at Beulieu this weekend.

I'd say restoration of a 70s/early 80s jap bike - classic motorcycle mechanics are always doing one, they make really nice jobs of them.

they just finished a z650, if you want I can send you the magazines with the articles in to have a browse through. They do lean on taking your time and doing it slowly and cheaply, which is nice.

The other nice thing there is that the top ends are quite easy to rebuild, and the bottom ends are quite tough. The only bit of a project like that that you'd need help with would be the initial dismantling, getting the engine out etc, and then the final reassembly.

How about something that is not bike related? Since there may come a time when not being able to use the roads for the time being will just be frustrating or even depressing. Confused
Maybe you could take up something like art or writing, both known to help with anger 'ventage' and provide emotional release, plus they are relatively cheap to get into...paper....pencil...set! Thumbs Up

Good for those days where the weather (like today Sad ) for example, keeps you indoors!

Thanks for all the help people. I'm going to keep an eye out for a bike which I could use a street fighter, as that just an idea running around in my mind, but I'm more taken and interested at current with the idea of restoration.

Does anyone know any web sites about doing this, or places with more stuff about doing it, and the bikes? I'll get hold of a copy of classic motorcycle mechanics next time I'm in a newsagent which sell it, thanks for pointing out its name and stuff Robby. Thumbs Up

Will be keeping my eyes on eBay and other places as well for a while as I'm in no great rush or hurry with this, it's just an idea of something to do.

Thanks for all the help people. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I don't know of any specific website for classic restorations, but frequently people do project websites chronicling their builds - probably best to just google for "gs550 restoration" or similar.

Probably worth getting hold of a few back issues. They have just gone through a restoration of a little FS1E.

All the best

How about an intricate diorama portraying the 'incident' as accurately as possible. You could get all anoraky.

Right out comes the tape measure...

You could find and restore an old Morgan three wheeler (the proper ones with the ash frame chassis). None of this newfangled four wheel business.. Neutral

In terms of picking a bike to restore/re-build. i would pick something small, and fairly simple/cheap to work on as a project. If you do this rarther than go for a more ambitious restoration project, you are more likely to see better results more quickly, and picking a small, light, bike thats easy to work on, and that you can get all the parts for fairly easily, would be a satisfying project, and would be far less likely to lead to frustration, when you get so far along the process of restoration, only to find that you cant get hold of an important part, to finish the project. I would pick a late 80's sports/trail 125 as an easy project, (RG125,RD125,AR125,DT,KMX) etc. Theres plenty of cheap and easily available spares for these bikes, and breakers yards would be full of them. The other advantage to doing up an old 125, is that if you didnt want to ride it yourself, when its completed, you would be able to sell it very quickly and easily, as good 125's are always in high demand for learners, and you might even make a bit of cash out of it! Id certainely avoid something like a Z650 though, as its likely to be a money pit, and require alot more searching for spares and replacment parts. Its probably going to cost alot more to recondition a Z650 engine, than it would to completely do up an old 125 to as new condition!
