Has anyone ever sold a vehicle on eBay? As in, chuck it up, let the auction run, take the final price?

I'm imagining you'd take considerably less than the price you might have asked for, but I'm wondering how much of a drop you'd actually have.

It seems like, if buyers are honest (and don't bid simply to view and say 'no'), it's a great way to sell a vehicle in a limited time span.

I'm not averse to 'losing' a hundred quid or two if it means not having to take days off work etc. It strikes me how difficult it is to sell a vehicle if you're mobile at all (I'd have someone view, and then the next week be halfway across the country)...

Experiences?

I've sold plenty via the ebay classifieds section, sold them for other people too.

Auctions, I really only sell non-runners and basket cases that way, just a couple in fact.

Agreed, I tend to use Classified Ad more than auction sale when selling a vehicle. As long as the price is reasonable you shouldn't have an issue selling. I sold my FZ6 in three days and got the money I wanted for it, last month.

Tried classifieds, never worked for me. Always use the auction option. Start price at what it owes you, if no or few takers, pull it and try again a few weeks later. E-bay is a little too dependent on the right person wanting your item at the same time you list it. It might take three or more goes, but you will get a good price eventually.

I've always sold my bikes on eBay and I have always used a 99p starting price.

I know some people may find this a wacky idea but my theory is starting dead cheap gets more interest which in some cases leads to a better price in the last few minutes when people typically can't hold out any more and bid like nutters! I've always had my bikes sell for way over what I expected.

Saying that though I've only ever sold 50's/125's which are a pretty easy sale to be fair...

I've sold 20-30 bikes listed on ebay and I've never been disappointed, then again most of those sold before the auction ended Laughing Those that went to the end of the auction sold for way more than I expected. I can only remember having a problem with one sale and that was a 'ped to some chavvy family. Sold as spares and they wanted their money plus petrol costs back because it didn't run. Rolling Eyes The main thing for me is to be 100% honest and put up plenty of decent photos.

I do the same. Just make sure you have a friend ready to bid in the last few hours if the auction is a bit slow.

No you don't. You both agree to cancel the sale.

Quote:
If after opening an unpaid item case, you and the buyer both agree not to complete the sale, you can change the case to a cancelled transaction.

By cancelling the transaction, you’ll receive a final value fee credit, and both you and the buyer can leave Feedback for each other.

I'v sold bike on auction b4 the classfifieds realy popular. People came and started trying to knock the price down for every scratch off of what was already peanuts. Classifieds is the way to go and make it as detailed as possible

Yes, a number of times, but I generally only sell my cars when they are well past their best, so chuck it up, 99p start, take what you get. It is a hassle free disposal more than anything else.

Funny enough it's what I do when ones of the cars is due for the scrap heap. Unfortunately it is also the first place I look for the replacement.

I've sold nearly all of the bikes and cars I've wanted rid of over the last ten years on ebay.

It works.

The trick is to be honest, take lots of photos, do a ten day auction starting on a Thursday night so there are two weekends to come and view the bike/car.

Then set the starting price as the absolute bare minimum you'd want for the bike, and be realistic with it. It seems to work better with bikes than it does with cars for some reason.

The only thing that irritates me about selling on eBay is the selection of people who always email saying "I will give you £xxxx for it."

It's usually a silly offer, and I tend to reply back saying "Come and look at it first, then make an offer based on what you see."

I suspect some people just send emails off to loads of sellers to see who might agree to a silly offer.

Sold bikes as both auctions and classifieds - tend to stick with classifieds now.

With auctions, start at 99p and have a "friend" bid it up to the price range you want it. Make sure you have "also listed elsewhere, so may end the auction early" in the listing. If you get any "I'll give you £5 and some Pringles" type offers, post them up on the auction and answer them there.

For classifieds, just list it at the price you want for it, plus a bit more for haggling room.

I;d go with classifieds myself, if for nothing more than people who turn up to view or ask are usually actually interested in buying it, the fear with auctions is that it will run for X number of days, only for some twat to bid highest then decide they don't want it, meaning you have to run the auction action, ergo more fuck around. Sure theres the second chance option for the next bidder down, but if they're like me and hunting for a bike they may have a few irons in the fire so to speak and by the time you've established that the first guy is playing silly bollocks the second person has laid their cash in someones hands.

Sold two bikes on ebay and one on gumtree, both ebays were via classifieds and I never took less than I was happy to let it go for.

Am I the only person in the world to attract uBer Mongoloids when selling a car/bike on eBay?

The remains of the Kwak went on eBay (bent bars and dented tank otherwise running OK) that took 3 attempts to sell before the winning bidder turned up and paid in cash, the first two were non contacts after sale.
Numerous " Hai M8, I;ll giv U 20p to tek away 2Nite" messages.

Same with cars, the only hassle free sale was a ZX where the new buyer came from Wales and probably had no option but to drive it back or try and buy a train ticket back to Llanwiddlybobgogogoch again.

I agree, certainly some of them are dealers.

I also got "I don't want to insult you but I only have £1800 saved up and ain't got any more, can I buy the bike?" They even typed the word "ain't" rather than "haven't."

I have my CBR on Ebay classified at the minute - cost me £14.99 with pics and an offer button with a guide price.

Its on for 28 days, which wasn't too bad I thought. I will remove the ad when I've got cash in my hand, despite who promises to turn up and view.

With a bit of common sense, I though £15 wasn't too bad.

Just don't click offer accepted then, cos it ends the classified ad and you can't revert it, IIRC.
