I had an accident on 23rd June where a learner was indicating right and then just randomly turned left into me (paint diagram coming!). I didn't post about it at the time because it really isn't that interesting. The bike has a bit of fairing scraping and a few broken mounts, along with broken front indicator lenses (yes...I know...I should have fitted an R&G kit...). I had a slightly bruised knee and rode the bike home.

Anyway the driving instructor's insurers, Aviva, have admitted fault and had me go and get a quote from a local Kawasaki specialist, who made up a list of £2000 worth of parts. They sent round an engineer today who valued the bike at £1500 with a £450 buy back and said it would be a cat c write off.

So, here's the questions, before Aviva call me back probably asking for a decision. Is that high a buy back normal? Do I have to declare that it's cat c to the DVLA/future insurers etc? Anything else I need to watch out for?

Just a note, I bought some new indicator lenses and kept riding it, the damage really is just a bit of scraped and in places, broken plastic. Laughing

It'll be that high as the engineer rightly recognises it is minor cosmetics and it still roadworthy.

You do not have to notify future insurers unless they ask. Why offer further info, right.

It'll just show up if anyone does a HPI type check.

Retain the bike and enjoy. Very Happy

That's more or less what I was thinking. Might get a set of Chinese fairings...might just ride it more and have more of an excuse to do some track days Twisted Evil

So here is what happened for those who care. Lights went green, I was behind the learner who was indicating right (I wanted to go straight), he moved (as expected) to the right so I went round the left...then suddenly he swung to the left and despite the low speed I wasn't able to avoid sliding on the left of the bike. I think I could have saved it if he had stopped in a sensible amount of time or stopped turning left Sad

Everything I've read says, don't accept the first valuation they give you. It'll always be a bit low ball. Fight it, show them plenty of examples (private ads, dealers ads, ebay, autotrader etc) of same bike with comparable milage and condition (at time of accident).

Will likely be in the same boat as you. However I'm stuck with other insurance refusing to agree liability. My insurance is taking them to court a they're convinced it was 100% not my fault. Going to be a while. In mean time, my bike riders fine, just got bunch of scratches and is going through MOT today! If they do cat-c it later, will it need another MOT?!

When I got my Hornet written off dented tank bust indicator, scrapped exhaust, I didn't have to pay a penny to keep it.

Oh and it's faring not fairings, you only have one.

Had a chat with the very nice engineer guy. I suggested a value of £1500 (it's a 30,000 mile, 2001 model) and he said that was spot on. He then went on to say that officially I should get a payout of £1500 - (35% of £1500) = about £975 and it would be recorded as a Cat C. However he said that if we forget about a few of the bits on my parts quote, they could just give me funds in lieu of repair about about £1000 and leave it at that Wink Wink ...considering the fact I'm not actually going to repair it (at least not right now) I didn't argue.

Nope just keep riding!

Atomic Punk: Sorry; fairing panels!

edit: So in conclusion this thread was largely pointless but I did get to make a paint diagram Mr. Green

Sometimes a straightforward quickie with a happy ending can be quite satisfying. Thumbs Up

Holy crap Aviva are efficient...might have to get insured with them in the future!

This almost makes up for the shafting I got in court when I got knocked off my Bros by an idiot van driver in 2011...
