Yesterday my bike wouldn't start, it was just ticking/knocking from where the clutch plate is. I turned it off and on again and it's started up. It then stalled once I got round the corner, it could have been me stalling it pulling off but I didn't dump the clutch, anyhow it wouldn't start up so I had to turn it off and on again.

Thought that was the end of it until this morning, got to work and whilst going through the carpark it died again (crawling at 5mph) and wouldn't start up.

I pushed it to a parking bay and it wouldn't start until I had the choke on fully, even though the bike had been running for 15-20minutes so it was warmed up.

Any ideas? Initially I thought battery/starter motor but then today it needed closed choke to start...

I presume you actually mean a fully open choke, rather than closed. If what you're hearing is more of a clicking than a ticking/knocking, then that's the sound of your starter solenoid. If that's all your hearing, then there's a problem with your starter motor.

If it is a knocking, then it could still be your starter motor trying to turn. That's what my old Suzuki sounded like, and when I took it apart it looked like this;

Hint, the magnets shouldn't be in pieces.

Although, I can't think of why that should cause the bike to stall. It's a fairly easy job to whip it out and open it up to look at it. I'd suggest it if even only to eliminate it as a cause of your problem.

Sounds like either way I should have someone look at the starter motor then. It did sound more like a ticking noise now you mention it.

When I say closed choke, I mean I had to put the choke on. No idea why it needed choke to start up considering it has been running for 20 mins. Edit: Yeah, i worded the original post badly.

It really is very easy to check yourself. It's only two bolts that hold it on, and two nuts for the cables. Then it's just two more screws on the cap, and you can take the inside out. Not very scarey mechanics. You can test them by connecting them up to a battery whilst off the engine, but ideally you need a vice for that, or they go skittering off. There's a really good video on YouTube showing how to test a starter motor.
