Get some decent Web design software - I recommend Microsoft Frontpage XP or newer.

Get a FTP client and find a host for your site, oh and you might like to register a domain. Smile

Frontpage Rolling Eyes
Get dreamweaver, it is better.
But yeah, that and an FPT client (I use smartFPT) and then you need to decide how big the site needs to be (bandwith/storage etc) and find a suitable host/domain.

Don't use frontpage or dreamweaver.

If you want to be successful, do it the proper way. Noone's going to take you seriously with a site made in frontpage or dreamweaver.

Either make an html site in notepad, or better still, learn php and make a site using that.

That's bollocks. Many, many professional web companies use tools like Dreamweaver to build sites.

Ok, just by looking at your site I'm guessing you're pretty new to the whole website/html thing. People here are talking about Flash, PHP, etc...

I'd say start at the basics. If you can't make the page look decent in HTML then why bother trying the more complex web based stuff?

First off, have you ever used Microsoft Word? If yes I'd advise you to start at Frontpage 2000 or newer. It's interface will be familiar, the help files are good and it can produce a half decent looking webpage with it's WYSIWYG engine. It's not the tool of professionals by any means but it will start you off nicely.

When you're creating web pages in Frontpage also take note of the HTML section (tab at the bottom of the screen...) It's good to have knowledge of the base language that most websites are based on, or more specifically the layout and rules of the code. Wrapping everything in tags for example and nesting tables, etc...

After that you should know enough to make a choice as to your next package. Most web designers I know use a WYSIWYG design program to shell out a website and then spend 90% of the time working in notepad. I wouldn't advise that until you've familiarized yourself with the code though Smile

PHP/ASP/CGI/SQL is dynamic. Many people use it for databases or to make advanced web pages. For a beginner plain HTML would be good enough i suppose.

This board uses PHP and it would be impossible to make it in plain HTML.

My page was made with a WYSIWYG for Mac. I went from not having a clue what HTML was or how webpages were made, to having what I think is a decent personal homepage in the space of a couple of weeks. Obviously it needs some tidying up in places but for a first attempt from scratch it's okay.

Dreamweaver is love, you can effectively make it all with code, then just one buttom, see how it comes out.
And it is great in that you can add say, a table, in the "preview/site" view, then switch to code, to see how it is done, and so on, I think it helped me learn HTML pretty fast, faster than just doing it in notepad/with tutorials would have.

Here's a quick suggestion. Nip down to the shops and get .NET magazine. There will be a cover disk that usually contains some stuff to get you started and there's a bit of advice in the mag. You could also check out their forum site for other advice and any other comments.

And as a sidenote, you are exceeding your bandwidth limits because the pictures haven't been resampled. There's about 3MB of pictures on one page (which is loads!).

IMO to create a successful website the content is by far the most important factor. These days, anyone can make a site that looks good. The end result is that you want people to view your site. If you arn't relying on printed advertising then you want to get noticed by search engines. Your design should obviously look good but from the begining you should think about how a bot/spider is gonna read your site. There are many sites out there that look good but arn't getting the use they deserve because the authors havn't got there head around SEO.

I've done quite a lot with html, php, mysql and so on but have only recently begun to understand search engine optermisation.
I'm probably a bit sad but I even created a spider of my own and am watching it crawl around the web. It's kinda fun seeing where it wonders up, and very interesting in terms of advertising a site.

Have a look at the bottom of each post. Everyone with a "www" icon has a webpage.

Like I said I built mine from no knowledge of HTML in a couple of weeks.
