What would be an affordable bicycle for riding off road, mainly on bridleways and that sort of thing?

Define your budget first?

I'd get yourself measured at a halfords to see what frame size you are, then start hunting around used on ebay.

Carrera Vulcan
Voodoo Hoodoo
Specialized Rockhopper/Hardrock
Trek 4xxx series

They're about the 350-500 mark brand new and will mostly come with hydraulic brakes and usually SR suntour XCM forks.

Also depends if you're looking to go 29" wheel size or 26". 29ers are all the rage now, so start doing your online research to pros and cons. I eventually went and got myself a Trek Full Suspension bike as an upgrade from my Trek 4300.

Carrera Vulcan Or Voodoo Bantu.

£359 and £399 respectivley

The above two are better specced than my Missus's Cannondale SL5 which cost £529 !!!!

Just make sure everything is tight as some of the bike mechanics in Halfords are monkeys.
