So, the misses and I are avoiding the Chinese summer heat in Thailand, and decided to stay a few weeks on Koh Samet. Which is a national park (literally, all but the port/town at the top) so all the roads are mud and knackered concrete.

I had had 3 months bike free in China, so was determined to rent a bike.

This is what I ended up with (and is the standard transport here, and about as much as you need)...

I think this is her mean biker face...

I'm growing quite partial to it actually... surprisingly suited to offroad shite.

So, what else have you seen/got pictures of?

R1 is one of my favourites - as I've often mocked the GS brigade with.

If you don't need the ground clearance (and not many people want to be doing stuff that does on a GS), might as well stick dirt tyres on any bike. Nick Sanders did fine zipping around the world on his R1.

One pictured above was competing in the erzburg prologue and doing pretty well too - it's a rally style hill climb, like pikes peak was before it was paved - so nothing too extreme, but need to be going pretty fast.

Hi

Oddest one I have seen photos of (in a magazine about 20 years ago) was a slab sided GSXR1100 with a long arm used for off road hill climbs.

All the best

I saw an article in a bike magazine a while back about a bloke (who owned a breakers yard) who had built a Z1300 6 cylinder dirt bike. The skinny front forks looked like they were begging for mercy.

That reminded me, in Australia I read an article on cruisers fitted with car tyres on the rear... cheaper over (massive) distances, but handle like you'd expect.

Can't find any pictures. Was called something like 'flattrack' or 'flatback'. I dunno, a year ago at least...

Something like this Question

https://www.bigboyzheadporting.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=125

I've seen a few custom chops locally over the years with absolutely gigantic rear tyres on them, but i'm not sure if they were car tyres as allseemed to have a very slight curve across the tyre still

It's common in the US where they call it 'darksiding'; have to have a cool name to make up for doing something pretty retarded!

Ok, actually for the riding they do, it's probably a good idea - lots of straight roads and certainly none of that getting the power down early coming out of a corner nonsense!
As bike tyres generally aren't too stressed with 'easy' riding, no reason the corner of a car tyre shouldn't be able to cope.
