My bike had a service a while ago and I asked the guy doing it what might be causing the jerkyness in the front brake. (present since buying it)

I've been told that it's probably just the disk not being perfectly flat but it's been annoying me lately so I'm wondering what can be done.

The calipers are the standard upgrade to the ZZR being nissin (think from a fire blade)

Should I start replacing rotors in the hope of resolving it or just get over it?

It doesn't affect braking performance, just not as smooth as could be when drawing to a stop unless you ease off and allow the rear to bring the bike to a stop.

Use a socket to tighten a nut and bolt through the semi floaters and spray with brake cleaner as you do. Should sort it Wink

And might as well get Nissins done whilst you're at it

It has nissins on and everything seems to be tight.

The mechanic checked everything over while fitting new pads during it's last service and couldn't find anything wrong which is where the conclusion that the rotor isn't constant thickness came from.

It could be warped discs, it could be an incompatibility between discs and pad material. It could even be down to the front tyre having uneven wear so a few things to check up on.

If you suspect the disks are warn or warped and you have a manual for the bike it should list the acceptable limit for the disks, a dial gauge certainly isn't the cheapest tool you'll ever buy but it is cheaper than replacing the disks if they are fine.

He can hold a felt tip pen against the fork leg as a rough estimate when spinning the wheel, however if it's that warped you'd probably notice a pulsing.

Or more likely this. Wonder if the pads came with the secondhand calipers.

I'm not saying something is loose.

Actually look at your discs, they are supposed to be "semi-floating" on the front - look at your back disc and you'll see the difference.

The bobbins need to be loosened and the gap cleaned now and then so the disc can true itself.
See Here

Could be warped discs, but it's generally this problem that will warp your discs by causing uneven wear, and when left unchecked will cause the warp.

This mechanic of yours.....Did he not put a DTI on the disk and check it for runout? Time to get a better mechanic IMHO.

I don't know if he did or not, I was abroad while he was servicing my bike.

There were a number of things I was having him look into doing while he was servicing it but I presume he did.

What I understood from him was that my disk might have a slightly wider bit somewhere on it, but he could have been trying to explain run-out and I wasn't understanding.

My mechanical knowledge is classic car / old car based

Hi

My experience with trying to use a dti on the ZZR600 front disks was not good. Not sure if other than at the extreme edge of the disk there is a path the whole way round that isn't interrupted by a hole in the disk.

All the best

Keith

Trying that technique on the spare disk I have laying around (figured it doesn't matter / stop me getting to work if I bugger up a spare one) but I don't seem able to get the bobins to free up in the way the video shows.

I don't have a flanged nut but do have a large nut and bolt that's got a decent surface area to it.

Have I missed something?

Did the bobbin release thing from the video on my ZX6R recently. Pretty sure they are the same discs. It does not take that much effort to move the bobbin so any bolt will be fine. I put a slither of red rubber grease on the bobbin to lube it a bit. Seems to have worked fine, got rid of my jerky braking.

PS i miss my ZZR. Such good bikes.

That's what I'm thinking, except I don't seem able to get the bobbin to move!

Maybe try some brake cleaner first?

Not tried this myself yet as I've not picked up any brake cleaner.

I've dowsed it in brake cleaner!

As it's a disk that's been kicking around and not on the bike I even tried WD40 (i know, normally it's not allowed anywhere near brakes) but still nothing.
