Hi, i need a bit of advice on how best to apply for a V5.

I bought trackbike without a V5 last year, it's all legit, not stolen or written off and the previous owner gave me a reciept with the frame number and his details on it as proof of purchase, it was also checked by the police and came back clean.

Now i have a problem, i bought the bike a year ago and want to apply for the V5, the thing is, am i going to be hit with a fine by the DVLA for not registering it earlier or not getting in touch with them sooner?

I'd like to have a V5 in my name but don't want to end up paying road tax for the period i've owned the bike.

The previous owner had the bike for around 6 months and didn't have a V5 during ownership, again, he had a reciept from the previous keeper.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

If you are using it as a track bike and that and just want a v5 for convenience, just apply, put a recent date on and pay the £25. The last registered keeper might get a letter, but if it's been about and checked over I doubt that'll be a problem. Make sure you SORN as soon as the v5 comes if you aren't going to tax it, that's the bit they can fine you for.

No you won't get a fine because as far as they are concerned you've just purchased it.

The only issue comes if a previous owner still believes he owns the bike (IE it was stolen a long while ago). The DVLA will write to him to ask if he's still the current keeper as you'll have to apply for a V5 for it without sending off the old V5. If he responds and says "The bike was stolen on XXX date" then you'll be in a very large pile of poo and your bike will probably be taken away.

If it's already been given the thumbs up by the rozzers then you should be golden.

It's entirely the current registered keeper's responsibility to inform the DVLA of a change of keeper. In this case, the "current" keeper as far as the DVLA are concerned isn't even the chap you bought it from, it's some previous owner. They'll be left with the choice of either keeping quiet, or calling foul and having DVLA Collections Capita Plc chase them up for all sorts.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies, i know 100% that the bike is legit so no worries about it being taken away. I'll apply for the v5 tonight.

Cheers. Thumbs Up
