Hi,

Have started to do up a P reg CZ 125 488.4, this bike was made by CZ in conjunction with Cagiva and although it is different to other 125 CZ's it is still too heavy.

Has anyone any idea how to make it lighter ?

I will be removing the rear sets and also replacing the airbox with a K&N filter which will involve making a box for the battery etc.

Thanks,
Nick

It's a heavy bike. It always will be.

The mainstand weighs a tonne. As does the exhaust. Although replacing the exhaust is not necessarily a great idea, you can upset things greatly. That said, those CZ exhausts are NOT an expansion chamber setup, they are just baffled (extensively).

I personally would be tempted to replace it with a MZ TS125 one if you can find it. If anything, it's probably heavier.

Removing the airbox is not necessarily a great idea. Don't chuck it out so if it runs like a bagowank you can put it back on again.

Relacing the wheels with alloy rims would decrease unsprung weight which is always a worthwhile exercise.

Hi,

Ok thanks for the info, to be honest I think you're right I'm going to leave it stock. These bikes are normally quite reliable and best left in their original state.

A friend is dropping the engine off today after a rebuild and I will have put the fork legs back in after I resprayed them yesterday along with the chain guard and foot break lever.

Fingers crossed it will be running later.

Thanks again,
Nick

hi se if you can get hold of a regent 125 they are made by cz ant a cz engine wil fit streight in youl have to swap the wiring loom cos they run on a regulator system with no battery, the engines are good but the gearbox is diabolical jumps out of gear all the time the cz gearbox is much better. But they are as light as a feather equvalent to a cb125 or that sort of weight dunno if this helps

This is not the case.

Regent 125s are made by the Minsk motorcycle company in Bellarussia. CZ125s are made by Jawa/CZ in the Czech republic.

They are both very loosely based on the same bike design (the RT125) which was "liberated" from the DKW factory in Berlin just after WW2.

It is possible that the engines are swappable but given the build quality of the Minsks rolling chassis, I would see this as being a whole lot of work for very little reward.

The Minsks are good wee bikes though. I had one for my first bike and once I'd replaced all the nuts, bolts and tyres, it was a good runner and utterly reliable. Got me and two of my mates through our bike test. Given the choice between a CZ and a Minsk 125, I'd take the Minsk. Sweet and simple little engine which never jumped out of gear the whole time I had it. The entirety of Vietnam rides around on Minsk 125s.

Stinkwheels right. The silencer is enormously heavy with detachable baffle tube which seems to clog with carbon easily. Dont be tempted to try running without it because it loses what little power its had.
The crank is also of gigantic proportions which makes for slow engine pickup. Mind you they were designed for work hacks and thats what there good at. Your never going to get much above 60mph (at least I never could) no matter how much you lighten it, if thats what your aim is.

Well,

The engine is in and the forks are sprayed and back on and am just waiting for a mate to come up with his torque wrench to tighten the head bolts down and also for some reason I can't get the downpipe back into the cylinder head... have tried and tried but no luck so my mate is going to ave a look at it.

Looking pretty good though.

great bike if you cant get the downpipe into the cylinder head its because 2 things the cylinder is off old type cz and there exhausts where thinner , new type downpipes are thicker so you have to get the dremel a lot of times but they fit.
