A young lad (about 20) in our village (head to West Wales until you get your feet wet, then take a step back) has recently gotten his CBT (just) and hurtles about, balls out, on his Repsol CBR 125 like there is no tomorrow.

Seen him no lid, two up and recently, in this weather which is a tad warm, riding about in Lid, t-shirt, board shorts and flip-flops.

I know it is hot out there and a nice chill is a blessing at the mo, but there is a limit.

Been on a few Med' holidays and it seems the be de riguer to be in less than adaquate clothing on two wheels out there and taking into account the driving standards out there, it is even more of a risk.

OK, my jacket has a removable liner and "Air Pockets" for added ventilation and light weight bike jeans with pads and kevlar, but that is about as unprotected as I am willing to go as I would rather retain my skin to be able to sweat out of, rather than bits missing and not sweating.

Now at 45, I have that kind of father outlook for youngsters and attempt to lookout for their wellbeing (also work in a school, so know so many 'teen's from there) and have mentioned to him that maybe it is a bit silly to be dressed like this, but still see him in his tarmac fodder outfit.

Any advice on how to educate him to the dangers, or is it a case of I have tried once, now it is up to him and when he is looking for skin grafts, send him a card with I Told You So on it?

Am I being too much of a busybody here?

Should I just wind my neck in and leave him to it?

Sorry, rant over, just had to say something.

On a lighter note, been offered a mint RG500 Gamma for when I pass Mod 2, scared the carp out of me on a mate's RG250 years ago, so a 500 2t would end up with me being perminantly grinning Smile

Time to back off. Sounds like you've done what you can.
IMHO you're talking to a teenager so no chance. You'll be talking rubbish so doing exactly the opposite of what you say is taken as the right thing to do.

After all from his point of view what would an old fart like you know. You've probably got senile dementia, although as he probably can't spell that would call you something more anglo-saxon expletive based.

Maybe one day he'll appreciate that experience is something that does come with age.

As for the other thing, I hate maintenance on a 2-stroke with a vengeance.

Thumbs Up

I know you mean well and it's nice of you to want to help others. but he is only legally required to wear a helmet, which he is doing. So any advice you give... he may not be bothered about!.. sadly some people learn the hard way.

Throw him onto the road. When he's bawling from his skinned knee, say "Now imagine that, times a thousand."

Is the fantasy. In reality, you've done your bit, and maybe he'll stay lucky.

I do agree with your points all be it i accept its everyones personal decision.

I would of thought you'd be wasting your breathe trying much anyway if hes hooning around like that at his age hes probably feeling indestructible.

May get lucky and enjoy his casual bike 'gear' for years to come.

Or may have an accident and probably re-evaluate the choice of attire he rides in.

Only real lesson that could be learnt in any scenario i think Neutral

From a personal perspective too i'd be far more concerned about having no back-armour, torn skin you can recover from or live with - a broken back and possible paralysis is somewhat harder to deal with. Not to say you're guaranteed a good outcome even with armour - but it mitigates a large chunk of the risk at least Thumbs Up

I get to see first hand the difference armour and kevlar makes over trackie bottoms or less.

You only need to see one degloving injury to gear up properly before you ride.

Plus skin grafts cost the NHS a fortune.

Yes, there's the law, but apart from that, it's pretty much people's own choice. Where that limit is, that's up to the person, probably depending on the given situation.

Good for you. And really, I'm not sarcastic here, or anything. But just because you decide to go out like that, do you expect him to change as well? Did he go over to you and say, 'hey, take that jacket off?' :p
dolly3900 wrote:

If you really feel like you have to educate him, do so. But don't expect him to listen to you. Let people decide what they want to do on their own. Even if it's something stupid.
dolly3900 wrote:

Most likely, yeah. Mr. Green

Anyway, I'm not trying to be offensive, or anything.

I just really don't get why people seem to take this so personal. So what If someone decides, to ride without proper gear? The world doesn't come to an end, so personally, I really don't care. They probably have their reasons, but even if not, why should I give a shit?

And this reminds me of the vloggers on youtube who as soon as they see something that's 'not appropriate' or according to the law, start whining and play the almighty. Instead of minding their own business, or adjusting their riding style in many of the cases there. (cyclists mainly, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about)

All in all, let idiots be idiots as long as they don't cause you any problems, as as soon as you want them to change, they have the same rights to expect you to do so. Karma

(PS: It was 30+degrees here today, and I do wear my gear 99% of the time)

They could really do with adding to the CBT a 30 min DVD of nasty bike crashes by stupid people... Might open a few eyes and minds.

Alternatively they could give a sideshow of the best of BCF "random banter" pictures...

The Honda hero (one of the most popular bikes in India where sandals or bare feet are the footwear of choice) comes as standard with heel-toe gearshift and a sari-guard for a reason.

I don't get particularly righteous about it, nor feel the need to point out the error of their ways, but it always makes me a little queasy to see someone in shorts and t-shirt on a bike. Worse than that though is a rider in full gear and his petite, female pillion in tiny clothes and a helmet.

Leave him be. If he doesn't see a reason to wear the gear already, and doesn't want to listen to you trying to help save his skin, then the only option for him is to figure out the hard way. All you'll be doing is pissing him off by keep pestering him to wear gear.

https://blogs.name.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/objection.jpg

At least these three examples of road rash from the previous post were sustained by falling off a pushbike, not from a motorcycle accident.

https://www.strivecycling.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/Floaters/Hannah_Road_Rash6.jpg
https://i959.photobucket.com/albums/ae74/Clearancelines/matthew-clark_zps59516580.jpg
https://i959.photobucket.com/albums/ae74/Clearancelines/road-rash_zps0f3b7c6c.jpg

Whereas these injuries were sustained from a car airbag deploying:

https://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk32/ollethalb/parts%20for%20sale/airbagarm.jpg

My point?

Anyone who safety nazis about motorcycle gear who hasn't had a 5-point harness fitted in their car (they cost less than a motorbike helmet) is a hippocrite.
