For some reason today, it's decided it doesn't want to recognise the sim card.

I've never taken the back off the phone since I've had it, so I'm highly doubtful it has anything to do with the physical sim contacts on the phone. The card seems to work fine in a mates galaxy note.

I've tried all the usual "turn it off, clean the sim, reboot" type approaches.

Anyone else had this problem?

Hmm...found the issue

Something to do with an "EFS".

The phone's forgotten its IMEI, etc, and anything it uses to identify itself on the network.

rooted your phone by any chance?

If your EFS is truely gone, then it could possibly be game over. If it is corrupt then you might be able to generate a new one.
use a root explorer to find your EFS folder and copy it to your SD card and then copy to your computer.
If you can do this then you may be able recover it. Google search for the XDAdevelopers thread on recovering EFS. There were instructions on there about how to do it.
I have never needed to do this so don't know if it works. Use at your own risk. Wiping your EFS data is one of the unrecoverable mistakes apparently.

Yes, it was all up to date.

I've done a factory reset but it's made no difference.

From what I've been reading this morning, the EFS is what's borked.

Interesting given that all that happened was that I let the battery go flat to then give it a full charge!

No, I've not rooted the phone, as it's only 5 months old and I wouldn't want to invalidate the warranty.

This is happening on and off with my HTC One X+, one of them issues that you can't forcefully replicate but is annoying none the less. Some times get the "insert sim" message or just no signal at all, restarting usually fixes it but still, it's annoying.

I have returned it.

Just a ballache, as it'll be up to 2 weeks.
