I have a nice linen shirt but I spilt food on it. It has stained from turmeric and still shows after two washes. Can I save it?

Did that myself last week, bastardly annoying thing to get out.

Have you tried bicarbonate of soda?
Dampen the fabric, sprinkle bicarb on it, scrub it in a bit and then leave for a while with the damp bicarby paste still on it, before re-washing.

It helps, but sometimes if you've "set the stain" (especially if its oil) you might need a couple more goes before it disappears.

Dye it black, or soak the whole thing in turmeric.

Stop eating and take action. Speed is of the essence. If the stain is on clothing or table linen, take it to the sink and dab cool water and liquid detergent on the stain (washing up liquid will do nicely too). Leave for 30 minutes, then rinse out. There's a fair chance that there'll still be evidence (turmeric is a tough cookie), so next try distilled white vinegar - a handy liquid troubleshooter, so it's always good to have some. Failing that, try neat lemon juice, followed by a line dry in bright sunshine (we should be so lucky). Repeat any or all of the above for as long as your patience prevails.

Second the bicarb.
Or try vanish, I've used that on a few dry stains and it really does vanish!

I spilled something with turmeric in it on a skirt once, tried several types of stain remover on it and in my frustration at none of them working i poured boiling water on the stain and it disappeared.

depending on the colour of the shirt, you will need something stronger than bicarb. If you get it early, boiling water could do it. I have used caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) to remove organic stains like tumeric before. Would imagine any strong alkali would work, maybe even hair bleach such as hydrogen peroxide would work, but I would only be applying small amounts to the affected area

It has gone, I tried boiling water to little effect but then decided to mush a washing tablet into it with my fingers and it moved it but my fingers did feel like I had been playing with caustic!
turmeric does stain badly though, last year I used some fresh rather than dried and grated it, the grater is still badly stained bright yellow, what else could stain chrome plated steel?

I know it sounds a bit silly, but I have joined a Facebook page for cleaning hints and tips for forces married quarters. With hubby being ex raf was a god send when we had to move. Might be worth a look if anyone is in need of any tips. Everything from permanent pen on doors to hair dye on floors, cleaning leather sofa and what to use in carpet cleaners.
