It's ugly as fuck. I'd be ashamed to be seen out on that thing, even with my lid on.

Electric bikes aren't complicated or fancy, as they often like to be portrayed.

It's just like an electric forklift, but in a different order.

The blade riders obviously didn't know what they were doing (or weren't racing) if he beat them with a 0-60 of just under 4 seconds.

Electric bikes absolutely make sense as a cheap way to get about town.
But, for them to be cheap, we're talking making your own - not spending many thousands just to save a bit on fuel.

Yeah…… that is really interesting styling Sick

The action pics with a rider on it seem to actually make it look a bit better though.

I for one, will not be placing an order! It's almost like they've taken a step backwards - other electric bikes that I've seen (although some may just be concepts) seem to look more like our petrol engines machines, normal and well styled.

My dad was thinking of getting one for work. It is 15mile each way, and being in a workshop, he could just charge it there on their keep electricity.

A new one like the one linked to?

That would be a massive waste of money, as you'd lose more on depreciation than you'd save on fuel.

If you've got time, but little money, then making your own makes more sense.

Looks like they mounted a fat-faced ducati 999 on a buell Shocked

100 mile range already lost interest from me, i'd be needing to charge it in the middle of a field every few hours.

I bet you'd get a few SMIDSYs on one of those.

I decided to see how far I could get from a 60mph roll on in neutral on the way home down my road. Got me home but I got pulled out on twice as the bike was making no noise.

I'd love an electric bike, I only work 6 miles from home so could charge it once a week.

But I'd still have to pass my test, I haven't got £14k and I'd rather folk took the piss because I was going slow on a 125 and not because I was riding a hideous looking electric bike!

There's a company called zero who make em and theirs are quite conventionally styled and with a range of up to 126 miles could work for most of us to commute on.

Still need a full licence and still not cheap tho!

No, no, no.

First off, you could look at an electric push bike - many ride ones higher than the legal limit with no licence. Otherwise, you are allowed up to 200w, but the standards aren't very well defined.

Then, you could look at making your own.

Again, buying a new electric bike just seems pointless unless your a rich Californian ecomentalist.
With the likely loss in value, you could probably pay someone to fill your average bike up for a few years instead and still be better off!

You are allowed to ride an electric bike on a provisional licence with a CBT. It has to have less than 14.6hp, as per your 125 restrictions.

So, if you want an electric bike, get yourself donor bike, motor, controller, batteries and associated gubbins and you're sorted Thumbs Up. Free road tax.
I had looked in to it for a 6 mile journey too. Reckon I could make something with a useful range of 15-20 miles say, with a little left in reserve for a 'limp home' mode for not too much and keep it pretty light.
Charge it up every night. Commuting for pennies and as you're using much cheaper batteries (ideally second hand probably), you don't have the horrendous battery depreciation costs (which can be 5-10x the cost of electricity.)
