Right, before I get flammed/laughed at for asking questions about mopeds i'd like to tell you that I got it cheap so that makes it ok. Razz

I recently brought a Peugeot Speedfight 2 and am looking on getting it back to mint condition within the next couple of weeks. Basically it has been sitting in the garden for about 6 months and was in desperate need of a service back then so before I get it back on the road i'm going to need to give it some TLC.

I need to know what a general scooter service consists of, I gather the plug will need replacing and brake pads etc.. What I need to know is whereabouts I look to change the gear? oil and what oil is best to use. Along with that I also need to know how long the clutches generally last and wether it is better to replace it with a standard item or a Malossi one? I'm also after some new shocks (front and rear) and need to know what ones to get and if shocks from the 100cc version will fit.

Basically if there is anyone out there with hands-on experience with mopeds could you please give me a shout.

IMO don't touch anything malossi. Paoli do fairly good shocks for 'peds. Not too clued up, I have a copy of twist and go magazine if you want it! Laughing

Hmmm was it you that came to buy mine then Razz

Right first off the gear box should have a little black screw thing (like you get on big bikes) but without the dipper thing on it. Its easy to spot I *think* its on the left side further up from the kick start but im not possitive.

Most oil is fine. I just use the same oil as i put in the cbr250 engine which is 10w40 fully synth which is expensive (£20 4 liters) and probably far better than it needs.

As for the clutch, if it moves ok then I wouldn't bother replacing it, and if the brakes work then why bother with new brke pads (unless your planning on keeping it?)

A general service is basically spark plug, check lights, brakes, brake fluid, tyre pressure, engine oil, and so on. Very similar to a normal bike. The rollers and belt wear out eventually, how many km is on it?

I'm not sure about the suspension.

The brake pads are gone, poor thing won't stop although I don't know if that is because of the fluid or the pads because I haven't got off my fat arse to check them. Smile

It's done 12000km and had a new clutch at around 6000km. Its been fully serviced but I don't know if the rollers have been touched or what they are for that matter. Very Happy

i wouldn't bother changing the clutch then they last for 1000's of km Smile

The rollers are the equivelant of sprokets, and the belt is like a chain. These are found under the cover that the kick start sits on.
I doubt they need changing either since the mileage is so low.

Thanks for your help. So thankfully all I need to do is change the gear oil, top it up with 2 stroke oil, change the pads and spark plug. Thumbs Up

Oh and those bloody shocks, I'll just have to keep an eye out on ebay for those I suppose. Smile

The shocks on speedfights are crap, they are basically spings. I wouldn't worry about them if they bounce around. I just had a 2002 speedfight and it felt like it was going to throw me off it everytime I hit a bump.

Obviously if you plan on moting it, they may be a bit of a concern.

Mike has pretty much covered it all, pads, plug, gearbox oil and 2t oil. Its also worth cleaning the air filter (inside the big ugly air box) and changing the drive belt as the standard ones wear quite quickly. As for shocks for a speedfight, you can get dirt cheap aftermarket ones
