...and then kills himself on his first ride after only covering three miles.

At the risk of sounding like a 3DLD advocate, they really should make US bike training a bit more comprehensive than what it is at the moment..

Poor fella, that's really tragic actually.

What's the deal with getting a licence over there? Is it different in every state? I heard in some states you just have to ride a bike round a car park and you've got a licence.

Christ that's horrible.

From what I understand, some states require you to do the MSF course which is, from what I can tell, on a level with a CBT. Some states don't ever require that.

However reading "... on his way there, just three miles from the shop, Barry lost control of his Harley and struck a tractor-trailer, losing his helmet in the process and sliding underneath the truck" makes me think, rightly or wrongly, of these daft "outlaws" wearing pisspot helmets and denim waistcoats. FFS mate. What a waste.

RIP the poor bastard.

MSF courses are a joke. Old school friend now in US said it didnt teach barely anything and a cbt on uk roads would be more challenging. And with many states requiring no helmets. And the fact they have vast areas of open long highways with nothing to stop someone hooning along on the red line for miles and miles you get a vast amount of helmetless often topless college kids with almost NO riding experience on R1s doing miles and miles of wheelies from the word go.

Inevitably they end up living up to the US paramedics code for bikers - organ donors Doh!

The way that's written, it sounds like with his dying breath he pulled out his phone, took a picture of the bike and posted it on Facebook.

Their choice... In the case of motorcycling there's very little risk to anyone but the rider*. In that situation, people shouldn't be saved from themselves - governments should only be concerned with ensuring people don't hurt others. Parents and intelligence are there for ensuring you don't hurt yourself.

especially as they have laws against jaywalking - before Roger brings up the pedestrian/bike injury stats which are way worse than cars in the UK

A 180kg lump of metal flying along at over a ton has got a fair potential to hurt someone if being poorly directed in my mind Silence

Gear wise yeah its their choice all be it not the wisest i would say.

But in terms of training i think it lacks majorly, not to say our systems perfect of course theres probably a lot of room for improvement also, but at least it 'touchs base' with some of the more safety orientated aspects of riding.

I think because a lot of their road networks aren't laid out like ours theres a tendancy to just think you can go along in a straight line. Stop at a cross roads. Turn at 5mph, then continue flying along. But when these people suddenly come across something different like a windy bit of country road up in the hills or what have you they don't have a clue what they're doing as that sort of thing will rarely be included in any form of training and road judgement advice.

Thats a weird one doesn't even look like he was leaning over that far on unless it was the helmet cam making it look that way.

Maybe something on the road surface did it Confused

Wow, I didn't realise how easy it was in some parts of the USA to get a 'motorcycle license'.

Just came across it when searching for motorcycle crashes on YouTube (trying to learn from others & not repeat their mistakes). Saw one that scared me a bit tho: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Uay7OVbi_U My bike, cornering at the same speed I do, letting go :s Guys lucky his leg didn't get caught under the armco.

Tyres can make a big difference - I wonder if he had a dirt orientated tyre on there?
