I passed my test on a 125 in 2010 and am not sure about when I can ride a larger bike. I know the rules have changed recently but I seem to recall that it was a 3 year rule on the 125 and then any size after that when I took the test.

It's actually a two year rule. You don't need to do anything, after two years you can ride anything Very Happy

Thanks for that. But the rules have changed from this year, is that right?

Oh yes. Taking a test on a 125 will only allow you to ride a 125 (without L plates, on the motorway, and take a pillion), until you pass another test on a bigger bike. It's all a bit complicated, and age dependent. But, if you have already pssed your test, then the new rules have no impact on you at all.

Just for Clarity here... when you say 'Test''... what 'test' did you 'Pass'?

Lot of folk seem to think that CBT is a 'Test'.... and some, the more delusionaly optimistic, do occasionally believe that the two year validity on the DL196 is the two-year 'restriction' of the old 'restricted' licence, and that having 'passed' CBT... two years later they can ride a 33bhp bike... in a complete confusion of the regulations Confused

CBT lasts two years, & validates provisional entitlement to ride a 125 unsupervised.

To get a full licence you have/Had to take Motorcye Theory then Mod 1 & Mod 2 'Practicals'.

Tests were and remain the same whatever licence you get for them; but three test schemes deliver three licence entitlements

A1 = 125 'only' licence. From January this year you get that testing on a bike 120-125cc. Before January, you got it testing on a bike 70-120cc or a 125 that couldn't do 60mph (eg low rent chinky)

A2 = Only came into existance from Jan this year. Awarded for testing on a 400+ 33-45bhp

A >25Kw/33bhp The 'old' restricted licence; awarded prior to last January, testing on a 'listed' 60mph+ 120-125cc machine

Full Unrestricted A = Ride what you like Full-Licence. Awarded for testing on a 45bhp 'Big-Bike' prior to Jan, or a 600+ 50bhp? machine since, via DAS, or after holding A>25 for two years.

Those the schemes.

So... IF the 'test' you passed was CBT... then err... sorry, you probably cant ride anything bigger than a 125, and in fact if its been more than 2 years since you did it, and the DL196 has expired, you possibly shouldn't even be riding THAT without repeating CBT....

If you passed the propper 'full-licence' tests; Theory + Mods....

On a sub-standard 125... and got an A1 licence.... thats still all you can ride. A 14.5bhp 125.

On a listed 60mph+ 125.... and got an A>25Kw licence.... then you have been allowed to ride any capacity bike you like, up to 33bhp since you passed the tests.... and since the 2nd aniversary of passing, any capacity of bike or any power.

So... back to top.... What 'Test' did you pass?

If you passed your bike test on a 125 years ago you should have been immediately able to ride any bike restricted to 33bhp, and after two years ride what you want.
I have heard, as mentioned above, if your bike isn't on a certain list then you would only get a 125 license with no automatic upgrades

That means the second you passed, you were permitted to ride any motorcycle, including daft shit like the Rocket 3, UglyBusa, and ZZR 1400 provided you could restrict to 33bhp and afford insurance.

2 Years from your pass date you gained entitlement to ride any motorcycle you please.

You thought you had to stay on a a 125cc after passing the restricted test? Wow. How could you have gone through the whole process of training and sitting the test without finding out that that is not the case?

You could have got any bike you wanted, and restricted it down to 33hp. (or not bothered restriciting, like many people, including myself.)

You sir, have missed out on a long time of having fun.

Not quite true... most would probably be outside of the power to weight ratio also forced upon him, but yeah, pretty much any bike straight away. The good news now is that you can go buy whatever and not bother restricting it.

You had an A <= 25kW license. You now have a full, unrestricted A license. It's automatic, you don't need to get a replacement, although the forces of idiocracy might not know that.

If you do want to get a photocard showing A, then tell them you've lost it. DO NOT surrender your license.

When you get the new one back, it will show your A entitlement starting 2 years after you passed your test, and the DVLA will not budge on that. Sucks to be us.

So surely, when proof of licence is sent off, it would imply to insurance companies that you have not had your licence as long as you said you had, even though you have.

"Sucks to be us".

That's why you don't surrender the license showing the actual pass date, and also get your pass certificate laminated, notarised and locked in a vault guarded by 200 ninjas (or Warped).

I hate the fact that due to finances i have to settle for this new legislation.

Im sticking 2 fingers up to the govt and will do my 125 license when i get a permanent job (2 years looking for one, thanks cameron you kunt)

Nearest motorway is 20 miles away, so dont see the need for a bigger bike...

My point is, i could drive a fecking punto and pass a car test and move straight onto a ferrari. This country sux a bag of cox.

I'm nigh certain its power weight after restriction that applies. Pretty sure its just stuff like full power RS125 and such that's over the PW ratio? The Ninja 250R (which is slower than a restricted ZZR 600 btw Wink ) is the minimum weight for a 33bhp bike to fall in the PW limit and I'm pretty sure most bigger bikes will weigh more than that (all 4 cylinder machines at least?)
