Posted: 19:28 - 23 Aug 2013 Post subject: Driving Licence Today- How to get it. |
 |
|
Good Evening Everyone.
I have a quick question to you all.
I have passed my car practical test on 5/09/2012, and received my driving licence later on, have moved to another address so sent back the licence with new address and received it later. On the back of the licence DVLA stamped me category AM, A, B1, B.
As far as I have read, category A allows you to drive a motorcycle under some KW (cant remember how much).
But, do I need to do another practical and theory test again to get motorcycle licence?
What do I need to do now?
Anymore test?
I would really appreciate if you could explain this to me, I have research a lot, but everyone gives me different information. I am planning to go to DVLA and just ask them, but got no time yet.
Kind regards.

A quick look with google and a link to the DVLA site https://www.gov.uk/driving-licence-categories gives the following information:
Category AM
You can drive 2-wheeled vehicles with a maximum design speed of over 25km/h but not more than 45km/h.
This category also includes light quad bikes with:
unladen mass of not more than 350kg (not including batteries if it’s an electric vehicle)
maximum design speed of over 25km/h but not more than 45km/h
Category A
You can drive:
motorbikes with a power output more than 35kW or a power to weight ratio more than 0.2kW/kg
motor tricycles with a power output more than 15kW
Category B1
You can drive motor vehicles with 4 wheels up to 400kg unladen or 550kg if they’re designed for carrying goods.
Cars
Category B
You can drive vehicles up to 3,500kg Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) with up to 8 passenger seats (with a trailer up to 750kg).
You can also tow heavier trailers if the total weight of vehicle and trailer isn’t more than 3,500kg. The fully loaded trailer can’t weigh more than the unladen vehicle.
Physically disabled drivers with provisional category B entitlement will also have provisional entitlement to ride category A1 or A motor tricycles.
So, If you haven't passed your Full Motorcycle test, you should contact the DVLA and correct them on their error. ____________________ Current bike: The missus |

No ^^ under new license rules As I understand it, the regulations relating to motorcycles changed on the 19th of January this year - and code 79 means "restricted to vehicles in conformity with the specifications stated in brackets on your licence".
The letters "tri" are short for tricycle - so the A category in your case allows you to drive trikes. ____________________ Fuelly My Z1000SX

Ok, thank you.
The OP didn't mention anything about Trikes been mentioned on his licence, but after reading the comparisons, I see what you mean.
Does not effect me, so I will not be getting flustered about it ____________________ Current bike: The missus |

As said DVLA revised the licence groupings earlier this year.
I suspect what your paper counter-part is displaying, you think are motorcycle catagories are in deed motorcycle categories, BUT, are 'provisional entitlement' for those classes.
As such; you can ride a 125cc Learner-Legal motorcycle, upon completion of CBT, without supervision.
To ride anything else; yes, you will have to take tests. And yes, you would have to DO another 'Theory'... not re-do, the Motorcycle Theory test is not the same exam as the car theory test. Similar... but not the same.
Scooters? Well, they are a 'style' of motorcycle, like a dirt-bike, or chopper is. What licence you need to ride one, depends on what cataogory of motorcycle it falls into. Its not a different class of vehicle, and they make scooter's that are classed as mopeds, as well as scooters that require full, unrestricted A-class motorcycle licence. Though most are probably 125 Learner-Legal, you can ride on CBT.

What is CBT?
Probably best to do the CBT before you buy a bike.

A learner Legal is Learner Legal or its not.
What is a 'Learner-Legal' Motorcycle?

What Will I need to take to my Tests? How long is each certificate valid for?

The Motorcycle Test, Licence Categories & Age Restrictions
CBT is Training, its done by Training Schools - Motorcycle 'Driving' instructors. Its like your first lesson, but they give you a certificate for it.
Tests are done by the DSA, just like for a car, and you are expected to provide the bike to do it on.
It's ALL in the link I provided before. Follow. Go read. I't ought to answer about 99% of everything you are likely to ask, because its the answers to the stuff 99% of newbies HAVE asked! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!
