Right in September I'm doing a driving holiday with my Missus. The plan is to have a tour of the UK seeing interesting stuff. We have 2 weeks to do it and are starting from London. I think Devon/Cornwall etc. is out and so is anything much further North than Southern Scotland based on distance.

The 2 things I fancied doing (visit the Triumph factory and the Raleigh factory) are DoA as Raliegh have packed up off to india and Triumph are no longer doing tours.

Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions of things that are worth seeing/doing.

As for my interests, anything with 2 wheels, anything with an engine, computers, video games photography etc.

The idea of touring a working factory seems interesting to me regardless of what they make Laughing

You could go round Rolls Royce. Or Sammy Millers.

However, I'd fuck off to the South of France instead.

Shuttleworth collection at Old Warden and Bletchley Park.
Both about an hour north of London.
Thumbs Up

edit: also Beaulieu National Motor Museum, but that's in the other direction.

While in London go to the Hunterian it's a weird collection of surgical oddities. It's got loads of willys and heads in jars etc. to make it weirder it's just a room in a college type building.

If you get as far North as Glasgow, take a whole day to go round Kelvingrove.

Duxford air museum is a cracking day out.

Used to love going to St Fagans as a kid (and as an adult)
https://www.museumwales.ac.uk/en/stfagans/

Haven't been there for over 10 years now though.

Think welsh museums are still free, but best check if you are going.

I know it's not motor related, but you don't say what your missus is in to.

You've ruled out the best bits... North Scotland.

If I were you, I'd laugh off all the England and Wales nonsense, go straight to inverness and base myself there. Then I'd drive around Loch ness, loch lomond, Skye, The Cairngorms etc etc.

In fact, myself and the missus did that very thing last year. It was excellent. I can strongly reccomend the Highland Wildlife park in the cairngorms, the Jackobite train (steam train from Harry Potter) and the national museum of flight in Edinburgh.

Another idea, not just museums and stuff but can anyone suggest 'events' going on in the last 2 weeks of september?

Things like airshows, 'extreme' sports, hill climbs etc. things that are universally enjoyable Thumbs Up

Maybe on another trip I have family up that way, but this one we have things loosely planned in portsmouth and Yeovil, and up to Scotland would cut out too much time I think. Plus I don't PLAN on driving on that many motorways.

The MOSI (Museum of Science and Industry) in Manchester is cool and sounds right up your street. Plus it's free. Plus they want to close it to keep the funds for the London Science Museum so I'd say get to it before it's gone!

If you have a nice day then I would highly recommend Trentham Gardens - they're beautiful, but in the same vicinity there is also the monkey forest and some cool shops (thinking of the Mrs here if I'm honest!)

Liverpool is good for a day out - you can go get sunk on the Duck Marine, visit the museum of Liverpool, go the Tate, Albert Dock, Walker Museum, all kindsa things really.

If you're into exploring some caves, White Scar Cave is pretty cool up Yorkshire way.

If you want your bike fix and you're up in the North West then you'll see a lot of bikes over at Rivington Barn on a Sunday.

Failing that, we have video games, cameras, lots of computers, three things with engines - two of which are 2 wheeled, all at my house Thumbs Up Laughing

I'm guessing if you're going to Portsmouth then you're going to the historic dockyard?

I think I've still got my tickets. I'll try and find them = free to get in.

Well I'll pitch in for Yorkshire.

Royal Armoury in Leeds. Not a factory and not related to motoring, but it has shitloads of exhibits from all eras of history, like flintlock pistols, elephant armour, you name it. The place is huge, you could probably spend all day there. And it's free. It's close to the city centre too so if you do get out early you can go somewhere else, such as Thackray Medical museum, which is also just as big and just as interesting, full of really immersive exhibits where you can really get a feel for how much we've medically advanced in such a short space of time. Lots of artefacts and other things. Possibly not really your thing though.

But I do very much recommend the Royal Armoury.

Morgan cars do a factory tour. If you spend any time in this area you could see if there are any hill climb events as Shelsley Walsh or Prescott hill.
