Just purchased an item off Ebay and clicked the "pay now" button but it did not direct me to Paypal, it just paid up.
Then I was informed that my accounts were now linked for my "convenience" and there was a box so that I could unlink them if I wished. As I buy and sell a lot for cash and often items are still on as unpaid as sellers forget to tick boxes I could have got hit by Paypal on items I had paid for. Beware.

Yeah I noticed this the other week. Have declined to set it up as I don't always wish to pay from the same account.

If it had happened two weeks ago I may well have ended up paying for a motor and box twice. What is most annoying is that they link it as default rather than asking first.

I had a buyer who got caught out by that also a short while back.

I sold a spares/repair engine. I got a message from the guy asking whether I'd prefer cash on collection or PayPal. Replied telling him that he had already paid by PayPal!

You probably just clicked the "continue" box in the overlay that pops up in a recent transaction.

It seems to be some sort of idea to turn e_bay into a "one click" buying experience.

It makes e_bay a bigger pain, since if you don't want this linked garbage you have tread very carefully through the screens to make sure you don't get snared by it.
