Hi guys,

I am looking for monitor recommendations as I am wanting to go dualscreen for my final year at uni. I have experienced dualscreen in the past using my laptop plugged into my LG W2243S.

I found it hugely beneficial as it allowed me to view 2 medical journals, excel shit and also a word document all at the same time.

My current monitor is the LGW2243S. It is ok quality but is kinda old now and is only VGA.

My PC is also used for playing games so this should be considered in my choice. It's also used for watching films.

I've currently got a GTX560Ti so the two monitors would be getting plugged into that.

Unfortunately I don't have a huge amount to spend so I'd be looking somewhere around £100. I could spend more if it was worth the "bang for buck".

I don't know a lot about monitors although I was at a friends house recently and he had a iiyama screen which I really liked the quality of.

I'm looking for advice from those who know about monitors. I could spend £50 on another second hand W2243S or get myself something brand new which is more modern and better quality.

Thank you for any recommendations. Thumbs Up

You could either go to one of those places where people trade in their stuff for money located on the high streets.

Look through Gumtree for someone selling their monitor in your loca area.

Ebay, but then it is buyer beware if it a used item.

Other option go to a place like PC World and see if they've got any end of item or returned one that is heavily reduced in a sale.

Identical monitors is the best option otherwise you have manually set screen resolution and not have it automatically setting it up for you in the nVidia control panel.

5ms is the average response time, but 2ms response time is best for gaming and highest possible contrast and LED backlit monitors except the older type from a well known brand name is a good option.

Some of the older flat screen monitors have VGA & DVI, but some others have also HDMI which is an excellent option for future connection of HDMI output devices.

Thanks for the reply Scotsman!

I hadn't thought of looking in cash converters and the likes but that might be a good start as there can be some decent priced things in there.

I hadn't considered HDMI input but this would be very useful for attaching consoles and the likes as I no longer have a TV. It'll be something I'll look out for but wouldn't be a deal breaker without it.

I have experienced some screen tearing on my current monitor and I've heard that this could be due to my monitor. I will try and get one with a low response time.

Out of interest, what manufacturer should I avoid for the older LED screens?

Thanks again. Karma

There is no really bad monitors, but the very early LGs weren't that good in my personal opinion and it really comes down to build quality and to MAKE SURE there is NO DEAD PIXELS on the screen.

The one your friend has is good and I had a Samsung with HDMI in the past when my TV went I used it with my Sky digibox until a replacement arrived due to the HDMI input.

It's a matter of preference if you like it and if you want built-in speakers or not? You will no doubt narrow down the list of what is available for sale with 2ms response with a good contrast and the higher the contrast the easier it will be to see screen with sun light outside without it starting to fade the picture because of it!

if your looking for a PC monitor the AVFourums classified adverts section for computers normally has a few for sale granted they are used but i always find tech stuff to be cheaper on there used than ebay and the members are genuine Thumbs Up

argos had been doing an lg 23 inch IPS monitor for £90 ish but i think the deal has expired now

you could also try hot uk deals for deals on monitors thats normally a good place to look

in my opinion getting built in speakers is pretty pointless as they are normally crap quality and seem to be an afterthought of monitor design Rolling Eyes

Thumbs Up

If you are going 24" or more, make sure it is 1200p not 1080p.

Stick with known brand names ideally unless it is a mega bargain.

BTW, that monitor is standard high definition, aka FHD, not VGA. VGA is 640x480.

What I look for in a monitor is pretty much anything that isn't TN. TN has crappy viewing angles and poor contrast particularly when the vertical viewing angle changes.

I like the Dell 24" 2405WFP I've had for the past 8 years or so. I have a cheaper 22" Acer that I use as a secondary, but it's not nearly as nice, and is on the way out; occasionally blanks out, sometimes shows a rainbow pattern when in standby, sometimes conks out and needs to be power cycled to come back up.

I plan on getting the Dell 27" U2711 or U2713 next. They're usually a lot cheaper when sold though resellers than direct from Dell, unless they're specifically on offer from Dell.

Monitors are a 10+ year investment, especially if you get a decent one. And you stare at them for a significant part of the day, at least in my line of work you do. So it makes sense not to optimize for cheapness.

Monitors are a big deal if you're in to gaming and watching films but also working.

I look for LED / IPS / PLS

You want at least 1920x1080, if not higher.

Unfortunately, at your budget, you're not going to get anything outstanding for that price.

Go check your local second hand shop too, my place has a massive deluge of monitors to the point where I'm struggling to shift half decent 22s for ~£35, whilst that won't get you a U3014 or VG278, it'll get you something to do the job and leave you with a good amount of change Thumbs Up

Just be a little wary of CEX's prices on screens, lately they've been asking near enough the new price, sometimes even more if they are caught napping. Be sure you get some warranty with it though.

I have one of these and looking at getting another on perhaps the U2413 i like the fact its 1920x1200 narrow screens are fine for movies but a pain in the arse for photography.
