Its no major expense at £5 for a tax disc holder and £17 for tax, but its fucking annoying! Evil or Very Mad

Ive had this bike for less than a fortnight, having lots of fun as ive gone from scooter to geared Very Happy Very Happy but shit like this always puts a dampener on things.

I don't know how long its been missing for, it only crossed my mind yesterday when I realised i couldn't see the tax disk holder (there's an empty bolt hole where once it was...)

Would you report it or not bother?

bloody thieving sods. Sad

p.s. i did think about just keeping the tax disk on my person rather than display but I found this...

33.—(1) A person is guilty of an offence if—

(a) he uses, or keeps, on a public road a vehicle in respect of
which vehicle excise duty is chargeable, and

(b) there is not fixed to and exhibited on the vehicle in the
manner prescribed by regulations made by the Secretary of State a
licence for, or in respect of, the vehicle which is for the time being
in force.

Are you sure it didn't fall off?
They couldn't gain much from stealing it apart from annoying you.

Report it but do not expect anything to happen.

The fact that people don't report crimes because nothing happens means that the politicians get to say oh look crime has fallen! When really crime in the UK is worse than Krad land.

i think if you report it and then contact dvla with the crime number they will issue a duplicate,
hell they gave me one for the car when that went missing, but that was a few years ago

Report it and get a crime ref number. Get a replacement disc from DVLA. Having the crime ref number MIGHT get you let off if a jobsworth spots you are failing to display while waiting for the replacement tax disc.

If it happens a few times and you get a crime ref number each time. Get on to your MP with the crime ref numbers and lean on them to consider raising in parliament scrapping tax discs needing to be displayed on bikes in the new ANPR centric age.

+1.....

Until my fake one was stolen as they ripped the entire holder off (was only a cheapy where you simply remove the rubber face to take the disc FFS).

Now I dont display, and if challenged...."oh someone must have just stolen it... can i report it to you now officer?"

Even told one (motorcycle) copper I dont keep it on the bike as they get stolen, his response was "ok, fair enough", he didnt even bother ringing it in with the DVLA.

The failure to display offence could be used if the Plod wanted to, however they usually have run the reg' through the computer before they stop you, and it would show as tAxed. I also got sick of discs getting wet / lost / nicked, so now just leave them at home stuck to the fridge. It's only a snag if you've been a proper nob but the police can't prove it. The failure to display may be used then, purely to annoy you!

I don't display my tax, in fact it is in a drawer. When ever I'm stopped they never ask about it as usually they have done a full check on the bike before stopping me.

Done this for the last couple of years since one of my tax disks was nicked. I even showed the police on the BikeSafe event - and they just nodded. I keep the genuine one (+ MOT & Insurance copies) in an envelope and taped under the lid of the back box.

I hadn't displayed one for ages (kept under the seat), but the other day a PCSO turned up at my door and asked me to display it as somebody had seen my bike in town and complained to the police it had no tax! I could tell he was a bit embarrassed that he'd had to come round and I just laughed at him. Seriously though there's some feckin' weird people out there!

"Do know why I've stopped you, sir?"

"Huzzah, you've caught the scrote that stole my VED disk!" [hold out hand]

Report. Bet it fell off though. Wink

At the pizza shop all the scooters had the tax disk in a keyring holder attached to the ignition key. If stopped, we were technically displaying it and it was technically fixed to the bike.

Since we started doing that the tax disks stopped getting nicked, but it's a bit clunky to carry on personal keys though.

Was washing my bike one day and I noticed a rusty but of broken metal where the tax disc used to be. Renewal was 6 months away. So I waited 6 months to buy both a new tax disc and a holder for it. ANPR would show my bike as taxed if proof was needed.

The best £60 I ever spent was when a bike cop did me for failure to display.

It was a £15 tax disc which I had paid for but admittedly didn't have on me because I had just got a new to me (second hand) jacket for my birthday (that day) and had left it in my other jacket.

I was a naive 17 year old at that time and joining the police was one of the career paths I was strongly considering.

I could sense the frustration in their voices after stopping me and my pal on 125s and saying "so who's the one with the full licence?" implying that I was on a CBT at the time.

That day I learned that either they like to employ bastards, or the nature of the job turns them into bastards.

I also learned a few things about honesty and the police. Always lie to them in situations if you can get away with it because they aren't on my side.

On the flipside, I got stopped for 75 in a 60mph limit and got let off by two traffic cops.

Always assume you've been stopped by a bastard and let yourself get pleasantly surprised.

(edit: failure to display was added by the scum when I went to court for speeding on the motorway at night. It appears the Fiscal had some common sense though because that charge disappeared).

Why do people nick them out of interest?

Do they try and claim back what's on them?

Fucking pathetic

Used to be that you could cash them in. Except they sent a cheque back to the registered keeper or something now.

Now I'd guess people put them in their own vehicles, so at a cursory glance it looks taxed based on the colour of the disc itself, sure it won't beat ANPR or a police comp check.
