Bike Family Tree

I was at my Mum and Dads house a couple of weeks ago and the family photos made an appearance.
I remember seeing this photo a few years ago.
It's my Nan & Granddad, on my dads side, the picture was taken in 1929, not sure where exactly, but I guess it's somewhere in or around Liverpool.

Unfortunately the original photo is only 2" x 3" and the phone photo doesn't do it justice.

My Dad, (knows nought about bikes), said it was a Royal Enfield!
A few minutes googling and I'm certain it's a "James 500cc Sports Twin", see ad below.
I guess the headlight was an optional extra!

Both my brother and I have bikes, and I was going to say that bikes skipped a generation in my family, but my mum had a "Vespa" in the late 50's, so we've got the whole Mods an Rockers thing going on!

I too have a pretty poor family history when it comes to bikes.
One brother had a Puch Maxi back in the 70's, another brother died on his bike, not even sure what bike it was but my old man did have a Matchless.

My father has a picture of my great grandfather during ww2 sat astride a bike with a side car wearing his flying goggles and silk scarf.

My Grandpa on my dad's side had a 150cc Royal Enfield (I don't know what model, he didn't say) and then a Triumph Thunderbird. My Dad had an Yamaha RD250LC when he was 17/18 which I believe he crashed. Many years later he got a Kawasaki KH100 I think it was - he also crashed that and now 17 or so years on he wants another bike but I doubt he will get one.

Strangely my Dad and Grandpa had nothing to do with me choosing to ride a bike.

Edit: Sadly no pictures of the LC and am not sure about the Thunderbird or Enfield; however I do know of one picture of my dad on the little KH100 with me sat on the tank. However, as this is a picture of me as a little boy wearing short shorts I'm not going to post it through fear of getting "knobcatted".

Another edit: Upon very quick research on Wikipedia, pretty much the only 150cc Royal Enfield I could find was the Ensign; so I'm going to assume this is said bike.

Virtually no history of bikes in my family, so not many pictures.

There is a pic of my Dad on the back of his nephew's Vincent Black Shadow, when he used to get a lift back to his RAF base, while he was doing National Service, but I haven't seen it for years.

I had an uncle who had an outfit, before moving on to Reliants, then one of his kids had a CB200 and a CX500 for commuting, no pics of tham.

The only real biker was another cousin who I hardly ever saw, he was a leading light in custom choppers at one point, won awards at shows and had bikes in Back Street Heroes and the like, so there's a few pics of his bikes about.

I work with a lot of elderly people who often had bikes at one point or another and when looking through their albums sometimes, as with Sids picture its a different world seeing everyone in their day-to-day clothes on empty roads, really does make me envy what it must of been like to be a 'motorcyclist' 60-70 plus years back, totally different experience to the congested regulated bollucks we have now days.

I'm a stickler for safety and gear but still it has a certain retro nostalgia that really appeals

My dad was a mod and rode a lambretta or vespa or something and had a bike after his scooter days for a bit, think he got rid by the time my parents started having kids and no more bikes after that! Don't know anyone else in the family who ever rode.

Maybe if I ever have kids they can follow my footsteps, but they're not joining the military like I did!

My Dad was the first in his family to ride (Lambretta Li 150 Series 2, blue and cream) but rode it provisionally and failed his test. It was thus traded for a car when he was 'courting' my Mum On my Grandad's (Mum's side) say so.

My maternal uncle had a C90 for a while when I was a kid. Didn't have it long.

My Dad's brother has ridden all his life (like since before he was 'allowed') and has literally always possessed a bike since he was 15. He even raced sidecars at club level for a few years fairly recently until he had a couple of bad crashes. His step kids also both have always had 2 wheels since they were 16. He recently thought about selling up but but changed his mind since the bike's bought and paid for and insurance costs him less than a night on the ale. I guess he knows that he'd always want another one.

I turned up at my Mum's aged 20 on a Peugeot Speedfight and she shat a brick. They lost a lot of friends in the 60's to bikes so I kind of understood her hesitancy. It didn't last long though. I sold it within 2 years and made my reappearance to motorcycling recently with a Chinese 50 and she was a lot more receptive.

My Mrs was the problem this time but she seems to have accepted it now.

My grandad (step grandad- never met my real one)- I knew he rode motorcycles back in the day, he actually lost his arm due to an accident on one.. Quite fascinating to see all the classic motorcycle memorobilia he has dotted around his house.

My dad, like me, passed his test at 17 and when he was 18 he actually took out a loan to buy a year old Goldwing, god knows why. Other bikes I remember him telling me he had included a CB450 with fairing and a 900 diversion. He was also a special constable throughout the 80/90's and was often policing on bikes.. though not too sure what he was on at the time.

Think the biker gene must have been passed on. I wasn't initially interested in bikes, more so cars, until at 16 I got a moped and it went from progressing onto a 125 and getting further interested in biking. So I sat my test and passed 0 minors! Currently on a B6 although once i've got my years ncb, will progress onto a B12 (Believe it or not it's no different in price for one now at 18 with 0 ncb than what i'm currently paying but it's with a different insurance company so I cant be arsed with the hassle) and it is also cheaper than the likes of a thundercat etc.

My Dad had/has a 1974 Norton Commando 850, I don't have any old snaps of it but this is what it looks like now after 10 years of garaging.

Bikes are seemingly part of my family history which was unbeknownst to me until after I got my first bike.

My great granddad on Mother's side had an old AJS outfit and used to take his wife and all the kids down to the coast in this 'bathtub' type arrangement. His brother also had a bike until he was tragically killed near London Bridge whilst giving his friend and his friend's son a lift.

Grandfather on step father's side worked for Jaguar and did alright for himself. I know he owned a 500 Goldstar and regularly visited Ace Café - racing through London with Grandma pillion wearing leather caps and flying goggles. I know they lost a few friends around that time, apparently there was a metal bridge known as 'the shredder'. Sounds grisly.

My old man had a Boneville around 1965, which was stolen shortly after he'd taken me for a ride on it. He was one of the original 'rockers' I believe. The old dear had her cork helmet for years after, which I used to borrow as a nazi helmet for playing war.

My mother used to ride pillion on the back of my dads 125... Whilst 7 months pregnant with me! Poor dad had to sit on the tank!

My grandad had bikes, BSAs and Nortons in the 60s and 70s. Then my uncle raced Laverdas and Yamahas nationally in the 70s and 80s (against Foggy towards the end).

I'll dig some pictures out and see what I can find!
