I had to leave my bike at work this evening because I couldn't get it to start.

The starter motor made a horrible noise as it was trying to engage but it just wouldn't fire. Also worth noting is that the instrument panel would reset itself once I had released my finger from the stater button.

I have been reading some information that suggests it is possible that the starter clutch is failing to engage the fly wheel.

Any suggestions?

It's not something stupid like the battery is it? Dash resetting itself would indicate lack of voltage.

I forgot to mention that I tried jumping it with leads from a car, but that didn't work, so I ruled out the battery.

Having said that, the clock did reset itself two days ago, but the bike has been in constant use since.

After the bike failed to start with jump leads I didn't expect it to start from bumping. And I was not particularly excited about the prospect of pushing that lump around with only a pregnant lady to help.

On my VFR800 the clocks resetting and the bike failing to start is often the regulator/rectifier. No idea about CB1300's. I had a similar problem and was advised well by people on here. What is the voltage of the battery?

The reg/rec seems like a good place to start. Although, it would be an expensive test if not.

Voltage is only 'electric potential'. The power comes from the current, which cannot be measured without a Load Tester. And I do not have access to one.

If it started from bumping, it would have pointed to a starter issue. It would also give you the opportunity to check and see what the RR is doing with a multimeter.

When the battery died on my Sprint the clocks reset and it wouldn't bump or jump. A new battery fixed it all.

I will try bumping it on Monday when I get back to work and see how that goes.

If the clocks are resetting it sounds like a power problem, either low battery voltage or a loose connection.

I will check this when I get back to the bike.

So how comes the bike won't start with jump leads connected to another vehicle? Given that, by jumping from another power source you are effectively bypassing the bikes battery.

Putting jump leads on the battery only bolsters the battery on the bike. If there's a wiring fault or loose connection it will still have an effect despite the leads.

Try again by putting the black jump lead directly onto the engine or starter casing. If there's an improvement check the black batter lead end connections.
