I had a bit of a problem with my generator a few weeks ago, and a lot of diagnostics and starting and stopping ran the battery low.

Because I work only two and a half miles away which is barely over five minutes, it's not had a good run to charge the battery, so I figured I'd just let it idle for half an hour or so to give the battery some juice.

Went out to check on it, and discovered (excuse my terminology here it'll be way off) where the left hand half of the crank case meets the right, to the left side of the cylinder, there appears to be a large seal or gasket. That was leaking slightly, all the way around the crank case there was evidence of oily deposits.

The engine was very hot too, which made me think that even at idle, without airflow perhaps that's enough to cause problems. I'll feel an idiot if I've caused that. I'd just assumed that wouldn't be too bad a thing to do.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

With my extremely limited skills in MS Paint, I've highlighted where the seal is in this picture (not my bike): https://i.imgur.com/qONY32w.jpg

It's not the seal that joins the cylinder body to the crank case, it's the one that joins the crankcase halves.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Idling for half an hour or so shouldn't have caused it, but then they're not designed for it. You'll get away with it with a water cooled bike, but not air cooled. You may have cooked the gasket, but you should be able to see that once it's cooled down a bit and you can clean it off. Odd that it's leaking all the way round, would have thought it would go in one spot. Must admit, it's not something I've come across before, so I may be talking out my arse Very Happy

Idling won't do didley for the battery, you need to be getting up to speed to get a charge back.

Ah christ so after all that it was a waste of time anyway. Oh well, I did find an exploded diagram of the crankcase and it doesn't look like the biggest job in the world to change it out, and the gasket isn't expensive.

Bugger.

Oh well, live and learn.

Thanks for your input.
