A "master key" that could give cyber-thieves unfettered access to almost any Android phone has been discovered by security research firm BlueBox.

I think the Android market is going to take a BIG hit in the market for this and Apple & Blackerry & Microsoft is going to be overjoyed by this news!

I think you think too much! Laughing
This isn't new news though, I'm absolutely sure this was trumpeted last year at some point. I can't find anything on GooGoo now, cos this story is all over the place, creating a media blindness issue...

The TL;DR about it is that if you install software from a source other than the Android Market (Google Play) store, you could potentially have an app doing things it doesn't declare in the app description.

Because as we know, absolutely everyone reads the description of what permissions they're giving an app and carefully weights up the pros and cons before clicking "SHUT UP AND GIVE ME STUFF". Wink

Incidentally (or otherwise) I'll just go ahead and assume that BlueBox gets a lot of brown envelopes with Redmond and Cupertino postmarks.

I do that. If I can't rationalise to myself why they need such-and-such access I don't install it Smile

Except if you have "Don't install from unknown sources" checked and don't install pirated apps, you can pretty much ignore all the hysteria.

You fail at panic-mongering. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17713394/awnker.gif

Android is Microsofts biggest revenue stream, they're blackmailing all the droid phone manufacturers with the threat of bullshit patent infringements, they'd shit a brick if there was a serious possibility of Android being compromised.
