My car has just been written off with a fuel injector problem at just the wrong time

I need a 5 door petrol car (never having a diesal again) for about 1500-2000

I know very little about cars and I just want something reliable - don't care what it looks like or how fast it is - thats what bikes are for!

What would you guys buy?

https://www.autowp.ru/pictures/volvo/940/autowp.ru_volvo_940_kombi_uk-spec_1.jpg

1990-1993 Volvo 940 2.0 non-turbo.

Bulletproof redblock
Fully galvanised body
Non-interference engine
M70 gearbox with single-mass flywheel
Shock absorbers for bumpers
No turbo gubbins to go wrong
Four doors
Rear wheel drive
32mpg combined
Tow caravans erryday

1500 will earn you a shiney one with under 100thou on the clock. They can easily top 250thou with only general maintenance.

Mondeo, for that price you can pick up a 04 plate low mileage clean example.

I've got a merc C180, 2000, with FSH and all the extras on it. I never got a chance to sell it before moving to Aus. If you're interested, it's £1500. It's in damn good condition, with no chassis or wheelarch rust.

And I bought oil and an oil filter for it because I planned to change the oil, but never got around to it, which is still in the car.

Ah yes the late 90s to 05 VWs with the greabox linkages that fall apart, good choice there Sharon.

Personally my money would go on an E39 5 series touring, put close to 40k miles on mine, now at 198k miles, it owes me 2 sets of tyres, a radiator, one coolant hose and a door handle, which I stole off a breaker. I certainly wouldn't be going near a Golf, especially the ones with the chocolate gearboxes and just generally fall apart

Something like

ETA: The guy is looking for a cheap car, not a car with 19" alloys with tyres that will be £150 a corner minimum

ha yes 19's are deffo out, and 18's( Pref a steelie 16 thanks) as are turbo, pointless electrics, 4wd and any other shite introduced over the last decade to pay for the car industry pension defecit.

That Octavia looks the right thing but 110k seems a bit high?

Can't find any 940's for sale with less than 150k on them near me

Merc might be an idea but they do cost a bit when things go wrong I guess?

Thinking Toyota or Nissan as they seem to have a good rep - or what about Astra estate?

So a Mondeo is out then? Even with easy cheap parts, 16" steel wheels, easy to work on and as common as chips. Almost disposable.

2002-3 ford focus 1.6. Its what i would buy in your price range, you could get a bloody decent low mileage mint one. Ignore the later model ones as they have tons of faults, and as for a golfs dont fucking bother. The focus does have faults but they are so simple to fix and work on its unreal, and parts are cheap.

I think MR2's are great and white is the best colour
Not sure 3 car seats would fit though.....and putting my kayak on the roof might be problematic...and with those twin zorsts and a central box I'm not sure where the towbar would go for my bike rack/boat trailer...20 years ago I would have bought one...but then I couldn't afford one and had to make do with a Spitfire!

Below average for its age, a lot of very robust car for the money. It was just one example, if you hunt around there are lot of them out there. I prefer the wagon but you can get the five door which is equally nice.

May get crucified for suggesting this, i've got a 1 litre corsa c, same as you don't give a shit about speed as have the bike and traffic stops you most of the time anyway, more just want to keep it cheap on the car side of things as its the only way i can afford to splash out on biking.

You can get 1.2L corsas with 30-40k miles quite often for in your budget range, piss easy to do work on yourself youve got basic knowledge, cheap as chips on fuel and insurance and i'd say personally very reliable and quite comfortable for a 'small car'.

And don't look too dreadful compared to some similar. Should note mines a 3 door but there are 5 door versions in equal supply.

Got mine for 1500 at 33k miles, no problems at all since, passed 1 MOT, nearly at 50k now.

Tax 100 quid Thumbs Up

I needed something cheap and reliable a little while back, i ended up buying a 51 plate Fiesta (5dr) for £400.

Its cheap to run, big enough (just) to fit 3 kids in the back and after my Renault barge its surprisingly fun to drive.
