I know my new spangly SMX plus boots let me bend a whole lot less than my old SMX standard ones. Which can only be a good thing in the case of flying down a road.

I've crashed (on the track) wearing a pair of the original Sidi vertabrae and managed to twist my ankle bad enough to not be able to walk on it. I don't know whether any other boots would have prevented this as it was a pretty spectacular get-off, but any extra protection has got to be worth it if you can afford it, hasn't it?

I have the sidi vertabrea normal (the non spangly ones) and not had any complaints. Altho they do squeak sometimes... oh and your feet will feel like theyve been in a swamp when you take them off Oh and if its a hot day, they will feel like they are in a swamp when wearing, and when you take them off... make sure no one you fancy is in the room is all ill say to that.

I've got the ones in the top pic, in black. Really comfy fit (I was advised to go up one size by the shop assistant) from new. They've proved themselves to be almost waterproof, only leaking in torrential rain loike I'd get them again put it that way. Save yourself £50 mate.

It can be worth looking on ebay for 'new' second hand boots - ie. people have bought all the kit then realised the error of their ways, or bought them for their pillion who's changed their mind, that kind of thing.

Otherwise it's just look round all the places that sell gear online to see if they're cheaper than the shops. Though the postage cost can often neutralise the saving.

I have a pair of the tops ones in black, considering I was riding in skater shoes, I think it is a massive improvement, and I couldn't get comfortable/move my feet as much as I'd like, in the other pair, and yes they may "give" and so, but I prefered the cheaper ones, as they also fit my oddly wide feet better.

they are waterproof, but offer naff all protection compared to the race boots, and at 120 quid they arent cheap for what you get

best just to use some plastic bags inside your race boots
