Guess that a lot of vehicles don't get used for what they were designed for. i.e most car seats are empty.
I know what you're saying though.
I'd have one. Good vantage position, robust in a crash. ____________________ Diabolical homemade music Bandcamp and Soundcloud

My mum drives one, she has two reasons for driving it :
-Space, big family needs a big car?
-If she crash's she won't get hurt.
I don't agree with her mind, but that's her simple brain working overtime ____________________ "90% of all statistics are made up"

I take it back! Now you insult me! (may be true, of course, but still, an insults an insult!)
Purpose?.... simple.
They cant afford to make the most capable off-road vehicle ever made, to sell to people who need or want one...... so they build it anyway, then convince complete idiots with more money than sense, fools from whome it is only the natural order to be parted from thier money.... to buy them for a heftily over inflated price... so that they may spend even more money, cherishing it, and getting it nicely 'run in'....... so that poor chaps like us, with more sense than money, can buy them, at about twenty years old for pennies and go put them through thier paces!

This is 'redistribution of Wealth' via the natural mechanism of capitolist mechanisms!
Carry-on... CARRY ON! is what I say!
Cant wait until about 2027 for the forth gen Rangie TDV8 to hit my price bracket... my only worry is that I might have to buy a new set of tyres... faithful Dakars I've swapped between the old coilers will probably be a bit perished by then, and I hear they have changed the flange pattern!
Lode Lane! Changed a flange pattern! Can you believe it!
But I reckon that there has to be SOMETHING still in the parts lists that has the same part number as something listed for the Series 1! Brake pedal rubber or something... maybe the door handles.
I'm still reeling that they actually abandoned the chrome ball swivils on the Series III disco! Rubber Boots indeed! RUBBER BOOTS!
What's to become of the old split seal ball-wiper trick? What will people think in years to come when I cant say "Oh.. I think My balls are getting a bit pitted!" But, this, is I suppose 'progress'! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Oh and as the pictures on the thread depict - if you want to do proper off-roading, get a bike!
What is pretty challenging for a car is easy on a bike at twice the speed.
Only place cars seem to have and kind of advantage is deep water - but there's such things as 'boats' for that, which do it much better . |

He made it up there on road tyres! |
I'm not surprised about the road tyres; in fact on that kind of hard-rock track they often find more grip and work better than muds or all-terrains. Stability of the tyre helps too.
I've never driven Stannage, I have to say, I had a family drama, week-end I was booked to do it But researched it and seen enough clips & pics of others doing it to have a fair idea. Main problem is the width of the track, demanding precision... easiest I've seen it done was a chap in a 2CV! They are actually daftly good off-road, and on that sort of trail, thier soft long travel suspension, narrow tyres and nimble geometry puts them in thier element.

Because the people that buy a Freelander for £24k-£37k will take theirs off road? |
The Free-Lander though isn't really 'supposed' to go off-road. It was designed from the outset as a 'Soft-Roader' a four wheel drive car, that has 'some' off-road capability, rather than an off-roader tamed for the street..... a point made by lack of low-range gear-box.
Did you know that the Free-Lander development mules were built around Austin Meastro/Montego shells and components? And prior to launch, there was some debate whether they would even be sold as a Land-Rover, or an Austin-Rover? And that they had considered and built prototype front wheel drive only version, a 'high-back' estate car, rather like the old Talbot Rancho.
The Free-Lander V6-Petrol, used the engine from the front wheel drive Rover Sterling 'Fast-Back', and its gearbox, and the Turbo variant of that was a very rapid car; on par with the Sierra Cosworth. We are of course talking the 'Dream-tower' days, when they were surviving through some rather piratical financial practices; but there had been some talk, and some actual development work towards a suggested Rover-Quatro, using the turbo engine and free-lander drive-line, for WRC & Touring-Cars... aparently they got some engines on the test bed up to the sort of bhp numbers needed to make them competative, while the gearbox was showing potential..... ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Don't you think I have enough broken bikes to wave spanners at already!
Seriousely, it WAS quite amusing, and you'd only get away with it at a Classic Club-Trial.....
Youngest was about three years old; and when I pottered over to the Yennards for practice, he'd come along in the Landy... I couldn't get in the Landy without him, in fact... and quite often, I'd end up riding with him on the tank.
So, at an event; and poor mite... poor pitiful little toddler, gets a fright.
Still not sure what shocked him.... bike back-firing, sight of his mother... her telling him I was his father.... something like that.... but he ran off crying, and came to find me...... And did... half way through a section! And ran straight up to me, and suck his arms up for a carry!
Had to scoop him up mid section, and plop him on the tank, then sort of crouch to hold him between my knees as I cleared the section & could take him back to the car...... I got a 3! Observer found it amusing, and decided that the loss of forward motion to scoop up the toddler constituted 'interferance' so didn;t penalise me for it!
Landy was pretty useful at events, too, though. Apart from getting the bike into unhospitable quarreys and stuff, was quite good for bashing down undergrowth to make observer stands or clear over grown sections a bit. Slightly faster than the bike too.... not MUCH, I'll grant, but a bit!
10bhp rock-hoppa on trials gearing, it might just about do 50... with a hotter plug and a bit more oil in the pre-mix... maybe the ignition advanced a tad.... Diesil 109, topped out at 55, after using all 16 forward gears to get it there! Bludy thing. 60bhp! two tons and SIXTY horse-power! Bludy Metro auto had more than that! Wasn't even ecconomical for it, either. Just noisy.
Fun though.... it was like a very big fair-ground go-kart. You know the ones with the Honda plant engines, that are sort of flat out or nothing? You had to sort of wind it up, and then try as hard as possible to NOT take your foot off the accelerator... that was best braking you got BTW.... so come corners you had to sort of rely on big tyres and two tons of mass to hold you to the road, as you went round as close to flat out as possible...... the body leaning 30 degrees on the springs...... which is rather interesting, with drag link steering..... which gives 'roll steer'
Flat out, turn in.... roll... see where it goes.... try and correct it through a steering wheel which only notionally does anything to the steering angle, and demands six turns to go from lock to lock anyway...... so if it dont go where you expected it... you have a heck of a lot of shuffling to do to make it go somewhere different.. and have to wait between adjustments for the new lean angle to catch up! They don't call series Land-Rover steering wheels 'Tillers' for nothing, I can tell you! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

No idea I'm afraid, it was sent to me by a friend. They went offroading and this dude rocked up in his wife's 100k to spec auto-biography!
I got my Range Rover last year after I broke my left leg playing rugby. The clutch on the noble was very stiff and I couldn't use it, fancied an auto while I was still in cast.
The only reason I got the sport is because I'm too young for the full fat one
Wanted a 4x4 to get down tracks to check stock/crops, but wanted something comfy and smart too. It's the most comfy car I've ever owned, have done 500+ miles in one sitting and was fine, could have gone much further. Got all the toys you'd ever want too. Dogs fit in fine, infact fitted a hell of a lot of stuff in it!
Downside is the cost, they're expensive to buy, even with the diesel I get 28mpg, and tax is £475 a year.
There's ways to help yourself though - I had a puncture recently and instead of £200 for a tyre, I bought a 6mm part worn on ebay for £20 and got it fitted for a tenner. |
