PostPosted: 14:00 - 02 Aug 2013    Post subject: Oxford Lock Problem Reply with quote

'ello all, new to the forum here and was wondering whether anyone else had problems with an Oxford Monster chain lock?
I bought it recently and it worked OK - once. Then the second time I tried to use it, it just wouldn't lock. Its like the "U" shaped insert won't go in far enough due to the chain links being too thick. If it hadn't worked once, I would have said it was bad from the manufacturer but it has actually worked - once Sad

Anyone else had a problem like this and if so, how did you fix it?

If you take the chain out of the equation, will it lock?

If no = shagged (get what you pay for, etc).

If yes, how far in does it need to be Matron and can you possibly achieve that with the chain on?

Your first mistake was to purchase an Oxford lock/chain set.

Buy a proper chain, my Oxford monster was obliterated and my bike stolen.

Fuck Oxford.

Are you putting the shorter end link through the longer, then locking that?

The padlock on one of my oxfords [only use it as a backup - theyre not that great locks Thumbs Down ] plays up often, but it doesn't sound like the same problem as youre experiencing - the 'U insert' goes right in, but the key won't turn correctly and lock unless you shuffle and shake it about a bit, sometimes for a good 10 seconds or so, seems to be tempremental getting in the exact position to lock.

As above though, are you ensuring the correct end of the chains going in the longer section, sounds more likely to be the problem Thumbs Up

Yep, locks without the chain no problem.

When I try with the chain on, it doesn't go down as far and the two ballbearings inside seem to be hitting the non-grooved area of the "U" lock.

Both links are the same size. I'm putting one down further than the other. Here's the two for comparison. First image is locked without chain, second is won't lock with chain.

Pass one link of the chain through another link of the chain, then lock over the single link.

And Kura beat me to it although the OP didn't seem to take the advice on board.

Now sell the Oxford to some poor sod, buy a real lock and chain and never buy another Oxford product again.

Buy an Almax chain and lock, everything they say on their website is 100% true. Though I doubt it would actually take an experienced thief over ten seconds to defeat an Oxford chain.

To be fair I worded it pretty poorly. Shorter end link in that less of it extends beyond the cover, not that the links are different sizes. Embarassed

If you value you bike, get another chain.

My housemate has an Oxford. Doesn't look or feel like it would stand up to being dropped, let alone cropped.

LOL! thanks!

One things for sure, I'll be off-loading the Oxford chain by next payday. I like the look of the Almax chains so may have to invest in one of them.

Is Oxford gear really that bad (I know the chains aren't up to much) but what about their other stuff, like their pin-locks and bike covers etc?

I have an Oxford Screamer which, disappointingly, isn't some nympho from Summertown, but a disc-lock. It mostly goes off at 3 in the morning for no good reason. Not sure if it's better than nothing or not...

Their Disc Locks are complete gash. My alarmed Oxford 'Screamer' went off in a slight breeze but did nothing when me and my mates picked the bike up off the ground.

My Abus Granit lock and chain is about 20 years old, cosy about £140 back then. It has withstood the attempted bike thefts and stayed intact for all, was the saving feature of getting my bikes back.
I'm not sure about the newer ones as they don't seem to be as tough looking, however I was looking at the Almax as a second lock and chain.

Get an Almax or Pragmasis chain and padlock combo. Imho the rest of the new stuff palmed off in bike shops / online as 'motorbike security chain' is cheapo ching chong crap made out of recycled Highland toffee bars.

I say this having had an NC35 and R6 'secured' Rolling Eyes by chains associated with a well known English university and Superman's most feared material defeated by scrotes in under one minute per chain.

As far as Almax are aware no-one has ever defeated an Almax chain.
'nuff said.
