Hi guys,

Never been into motorbikes before but quite tempted now after riding a 50cc moped around whilst on holiday.

I'm 40, have a full UK driving licence with no points, with Category A & GH listed in my provisional section (both of these expire in 2042)

Could someone please advise what this entitles me to ride either without L plates, or with L plates ?

I've spent the last couple of hours searching forums / the government website but there were no concrete answers

Many thanks for any advice in advance,
Dave

As it stands if you passed your car test before 2001 you can ride a 50cc moped, without Ls, and take pillions. That's it.

To ride anything else, you'll need to take a CBT which will allow you to ride a 125cc (max 14.6bhp) motorbike with Ls, but no pillions, and no motorways.

Then, you can take a theory test, MOD1, and MOD2 and ride anything you want Very Happy

Be aware even to insure a 50cc the insurance companies may insist you have a CBT. This is mainly because their systems can't cope with this variant of car driver licence riding (as they see it) a motorcycle. I know this as my car driving wife has a 50cc Vespa for just running into town (easier parking) and the like.

I'd consider doing a CBT personally, its only a single day, doesn't cost much at all, and teaches you the bare basics of biking which will help you be a little safer at least.

Then you have the options of 125s to ride - 50cc's on UK roads are not fun Thumbs Down

If by "not fun" you mean "certain suicide" then you are right. They're dangerous as fuck. And annoying, but dangerous as fuck.

Some questions to ask yourself..

Do i really want to be riding on a dangerously slow and underpowered flying fart without any training or L plates?
Is my life valuable?
Deep down am i really wondering what it would be like on a real bike?

For gods sake do a CBT first and if your going to do a CBT you might as well have a 125 scooter or bike which will be a more enjoyable experience by far.
Also look into getting a free session at a school with the "geton" scheme.

I'm also in my 40's and although still a beginner these were my thoughts..
Hope it helps..
