Go to your local bike shop and ask them for a box - they'll have loads from when they get their bikes delivered.

I've just posted a bike frame I sold on ebay, ended up using City Link.
UPS have bikes on their prohibited items list which surprised me a bit, but I guess they must have had a lot of damaged ones in the past. Found quite a few couriers were rather picky. Definitely check the prohibited items list. I automatically assumed it would consist of no acids, explosives, firearms, when it was actually full of what seemed to me to be everday items - albeit ones that could be dented if you threw them across a warehouse. Thinking

I'm assuming that you're going to take the wheels off, saddle off, pedals off to reduce the overall size of the package. Also if the handle bars are easy to take off via the stem so they can be moved to line up with the frame it all makes the box smaller.

Other than that, pack the hell out of it. Put bracing between the forks and stays where the wheels were to stop the frame getting squashed / compressed in transit.

Best of luck - posting bikes is a right pain.

Edit: I'm also assuming your son has tools to put it all back together!

The bike's a Marin Commuter

My bikes all have quick release skewers which makes repairing inevitable punctures easier. Not familiar with the Marin in particular, sounds like they could be anti theft, but you should have a tool for them somewhere - if not a puncture is going to strand you.

I have posted hundreds of bikes and I start by going to bike shop/back of Halfords and getting a box.

After that I strip the bike down to the smallest size I can make it and then trim the box accordingly (remember the smaller you can make the box the cheaper it will be to post it).

I use various couriers like Parcel2go, parcelmonkey, Interparcel etc and put in the box measurments and weight and compare the cheapest prices.
